I usually do not leave them for long in the first 10 days. Newborn puppies require constant warmth and feeding, mothers should not be left alone with them for extended periods initially. Until the mother knows to move if she lies on a pup, or to help get one back if it is lost there is risk of the pups dying by accident. My new trick is to put a baby monitor in or near the whelping box and carry the receiver so I can hear what is going on while I do things around the house. But what I like to see in terms of behavior, to indicate mom can be left safely with pups, is that the mother recognizes if a pup is stuck somewhere, like behind her back, or under her, and that she gets up to get that puppy gathered properly in with the litter. Gradually increase separation time as puppies grow stronger, typically after 2-3 weeks.
