During this time your dog will bleed from their vulva and will often show more interest in male dogs. Red, swollen vulva Bleeding or discharge from the vulva Excessive licking of the back end You may also notice behavioural changes in your female dog when they are on heat. These changes may be a sudden over-friendliness towards other dogs, mounting or humping objects, heightened anxiety and moving their tail to one side when standing. While this is normal for some, others may be much more interested in male dogs from the beginning of their cycle. Within the first few days of a heat, they may not be responsive to male dogs.

Even though your dog will bleed, she isn't in pain during heat. However, being in heat can make your dog uncomfortable and fidgety. If her symptoms seem to be causing her pain, consult your vet. Keeping her entertained and distracted will help relieve some of her anxiety and discomfort. Extra walks will also help her to reduce stress. Your dog may have symptoms that are particular to them. She may be overly friendly with other dogs, seek out male dogs, mount or hump, turn her tail to the side, fidget or be nervous.

While dogs can’t tell us if they’re experiencing cramps like humans do, some behaviors suggest discomfort during the heat cycle. While it’s not entirely clear if these are akin to human menstrual cramps, they can indicate that your dog is not feeling her best. Look for changes in your dog’s behavior. She may appear more lethargic than usual, lose her appetite, or show signs of restlessness. Some dogs may whimper, pant more than usual, or show other signs of distress. Common symptoms include increased urination, swollen vulva, and behavioral changes. Some dogs also exhibit nesting behavior or may appear more affectionate than usual.

Being in heat can make dogs nervous and fidgety, but while they’re bleeding they’re not in pain and won’t experience menstrual cramps the same way humans can. If you think the heat cycle is causing your dog pain, take them to the vet. Female dogs in heat can be hormonal and nervous, and will often require extra care. Give her extra attention and try to keep her entertained to distract her from the discomfort.

Some female dogs do experience discomfort as part of being in heat, but it isn’t an inherently painful process. Many of the symptoms of heat are cries for attention from male dogs instead. Most of the time, your dog isn’t in physical pain because of this despite her seeming distress. There might be some pain and discomfort during this time, but it won’t be the same as period cramps. Instead, your dog will probably feel tenderness. During the whole estrous cycle, there might be some discomfort due to hormone changes as well. But the good news is that your dog’s cries and behavior changes are due to hormone changes for the most part, not pain. However, giving your dog some extra love and comfort during this time is never a bad idea.
