The four estrous cycle stages include proestrus, estrus, diestrus, and anestrus.
Proestrus is the first stage, estrogen is a hormone produced by the ovaries during proestrus and peaks one to two days before the next stage.
Estrus begins when the female is receptive to breeding, estrus generally starts with a surge in luteinizing hormone due to decreasing estrogen and increasing progesterone.
Diestrus begins when the female no longer shows signs of estrus, such as standing to be mounted, it is characterized by an elevation in progesterone, which peaks 2-3 weeks after ovulation and then plateaus at that elevated level for 1-2 weeks before slowly decreasing over 10-30 days.
Anestrus is the stage a dog enters either at the end of her heat cycle or after having a litter, progesterone levels remain low throughout this stage.

The canine estrus cycle has four stages:
Proestrus: The beginning of heat lasts between 7 and 10 days.
During this time, the vulva begins to swell and your dog begins to bleed.
She will start attracting male dogs, but she isn’t ready to mate yet.
Estrus: This is the mating period of the estrus cycle.
It lasts 5 to 10 days.
Bleeding may be reduced or stop.
Your dog is ready to mate during this time.
Diestrus: This period lasts anywhere from 10 to 140 days.
Your dog is either pregnant during this time or she is in a period of rest.
Anestrus: This is the period of downtime before the next heat cycle, lasting around 6 months.
