You can safely give your pet an over-the-counter anti-histamine to relieve their symptoms. The dosage depends on your pet’s unique needs and their weight. Allergy medicines that are safe for your pet include: Benedryl (diphendyrmine) Claritin (loraditine) *never ever give your pet Claritin-D Zyrtec (Cetirizine) Chlor Trimton (chlorpheniramine) Generic brands for any of the medications above NOTE: If you’re going to try an allergy medication, do not use a decongestant or anything that contains pseudoephedrine (like Claritin-D). Even small amounts of pseudoephedrine can be lethal in dogs. So, before stuffing any allergy medication into their mouth, check with your veterinarian. These medications work best as preventatives. If you know your pet reacts to hay fever, start treating them as soon as the allergy season begins to set in.

Although there is no cure, you can manage your dog’s hay fever with topical treatment and medications from your vet. Treatments can include: topical treatments such as medicated shampoos, skin sprays and creams wipes ear cleaner medicated ear drops or eye drops antihistamines, although these are not always effective in dogs and may cause your dog to become drowsy. Medication to help reduce skin inflammation and relieve itching, such as steroids. Immunotherapy – this can be very effective in some dogs and it may be the most cost effective option in large breeds. If you think your dog is suffering with hay fever, contact your vet for advice on treatment. Antihistamines are only given under direction of your vet, as they can be toxic to dogs.

Diphenhydramine, cetirizine, and loratadine are commonly used antihistamines that relieve allergy symptoms or counteract allergic reactions in humans. Antihistamines are usually safe for dogs but can make some dogs drowsy and others hyperactive. OTC antihistamines may contain other ingredients, such as decongestants, that are not safe for dogs. Read the label carefully to ensure that the product only contains antihistamine. Check with your veterinary healthcare team to make sure that the antihistamine you have is suitable for your dog and that you know the appropriate dose to administer. Steroid sprays, gels, and creams can decrease the itchiness of insect bites and hot spots. Always ask your veterinarian if topical steroids are appropriate for your dog.

Antihistamines help to control itching in approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of dogs with skin allergies, especially if started when skin itch is still mild and if used with Omega-3 Fatty Acids. They are inexpensive, readily available as over-the-counter medications, and generally free of side effects. Cetirizine (Zyrtec) ¼ – ½ mg per pound (one 10mg tab per 30-40 lbs) twice daily. Loratadine (Claritin): ¼ mg per pound (half of a 10mg tablet per 20 lbs) once daily. Clemastine (Tavist-1, Antihist-1): 0.02mg per pound (one 1.34mg tablet per 65lb dog) twice daily. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl): 1mg per pound (one 25mg tablet for a 25lb dog) twice daily. Hydroxyzine: 1mg per pound (one 25mg tablet for a 25lb dog) twice daily. For more severe itch/inflammation, an examination should be performed to look for primary causes and secondary infections, and stronger, prescription medications (Apoquel, Cytopoint, possibly prednisone) are likely to be needed to make your four-legged friend more comfortable. Omega-3, Fish-oil Fatty Acids, at fairly high doses, can really help reduce skin itch and inflammation and are healthy for the rest of the body.
