Dogs can safely enjoy certain drinks in moderation, these do not replace water but can be used occasionally to encourage hydration or for specific health needs. Homemade or low-sodium chicken or beef broths can be nutritious and hydrating, providing amino acids, collagen, and glucosamine, supporting joint, immune, and digestive health. Natural coconut water is a safe treat in small amounts and contains beneficial electrolytes and minerals, especially helpful in hot weather, be sure the coconut water contains no added sugars or flavourings. Non-caffeinated teas like chamomile or peppermint can be given in moderation, they may aid digestion and calm anxious dogs. Freshly prepared juices without added sugars or artificial sweeteners can supply some vitamins and minerals, always offer in small quantities as a treat, never as a hydration substitute. Electrolyte drinks, such as Pedialyte, are occasionally helpful for dogs suffering from dehydration due to illness, use only under veterinary advice as they are not suitable for regular drinking. Specially formulated puppy milk replaces a mother’s milk if necessary, cow’s milk is discouraged for adult dogs due to lactose intolerance risks. Regardless of other drinks, fresh, clean, and cool water must always be accessible for dogs.

Try an ice cube, instead. Make a doggy smoothie. Make an ice pop (watermelon is great because it’s 80% water). Offer it from your hand. Mix some into their kibble blend. Flavour it with a bit of broth (yummy). Dog-friendly drinking alternatives like alcohol-free dog beer, wine and prosecco and health tonics and herbal tea for dogs (minus the caffeine) are treats. We think they should be an occasional treat, not a regular part of your dog’s diet. But your dog will likely prefer a tasty and more nutritious biscuit or similar bite-size treat with a little water instead of a fancy drink.
