Your dog may need more than one treatment to make sure all their ear mites are dead.
Ear cleaner It’s likely that your vet will prescribe your dog an ear cleaner for use at home.
Once a day ear cleaning will help clear out any excess wax and debris from your dog’s ears.
Medicated eardrops If necessary, your vet will prescribe eardrops to help with inflammation, pain and infection.
Treat your home Ear mites can survive in the environment for months so you will need to spray your home, and hot wash pet items such as bedding and grooming equipment.
Household flea spray is effective against ear mites in the home but never use it directly on an animal.
Never use cotton buds to clean your dog’s ears.

If your pet has ear mites, start with the cleaning process. Then use an ear mite product such as our AniForte Ear Mite Oil. This product will kill the mites by making it impossible for them to breathe. For a medium-sized dog, add 2 drops into each ear. After 12 hours clean the ear again, but this time with just the simple ear cleaner. This will get the dead ear mites out. You then repeat this process for 10 days and your pet should be ear mite free! Put some drops of the ear cleaner into the ear and massage it, so that the cleaner gets deep into the ear. The best is to do that outdoors, because your dog will shake his head to get the cleaner and dirt out of the ear.

To flush out ear mites in dogs, fill the ear canal with ear cleaning solution.
If your dog does not tolerate ear solution directly into the ear, try saturating cotton pads or balls with the ear cleaning solution instead.
Gently massage the base of the ear.
Have a towel ready, as once you stop massaging the ear, your dog will likely want to shake their head, which helps loosen the debris.
Use cotton pads or cotton balls to gently wipe away debris.
Start from the inside of the ear, only as far as your finger can easily fit, which is about one knuckle in, and work your way to the outside ear flap.
Avoid using cotton swabs to prevent pushing debris deeper into the ear canal.
The frequency of cleaning your dog’s ears will depend on whether it is for treatment of an infection, which could be up to daily to start.
Dogs with a history of allergies, recurrent ear infections, or floppy ears may need their ears cleaned more frequently.

To treat ear mites in dogs, the ears must be thoroughly cleaned and medicated. First, a dog’s ears are cleaned with an ear cleanser. Epi-Otic® Advanced is commonly used, but if the veterinarian diagnosed a secondary bacterial infection, TrizULTRA™+ Keto Flush, which is an antimicrobial ear cleanser, may be used instead. Ear cleansers remove debris to allow medication to work better and are used once daily until the mites and infection are gone. Topical and oral flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives are the main treatment for ear mites. Although these products are not directly labeled to be used for ear mites, they are highly effective. A single treatment is typically effective at getting rid of the ear mites. Examples of preventatives that are used include Bravecto® and Advantage Multi™. Topical ointment, such as Animax®, will be prescribed if the dog also has a bacterial or yeast infection. Dogs who are in a lot of pain or very itchy may benefit from topical or oral steroids, such as prednisone. Ear mites can take up to 30 days to be fully eliminated from the dog’s ear canals.

Clean your dog’s ears at least twice a week to keep on top of wax and debris. Since clean ears are less attractive to ear mites, its regular use will make it unlikely that your pet will get ear mite problems. Beaphar Ear Cleaner should be used twice weekly to prevent the build-up of wax and other debris in the ear canal. To remove the ear wax from your dog’s ear, follow the instructions on your chosen dog ear cleaner. If you are using Beaphar Ear Cleaner, prime the pipette and squeeze 6–8 drops at the entrance to the ear canal. Gently massage the ear from the outside to help the cleaning process. Should your dog get ear mites, Beaphar Ear Drops are a licensed veterinary medicine, which kills ear mites. It also softens wax, soothes irritation, and assists healing.
