Depending on which is most suitable for your dog's condition, there are a few treatment options that your vet may recommend. Spot on flea treatments prevent and treat ear mites. If recommended by your vet, this is the easiest way to protect your dog from the parasites. They are less stressful for your dog than ear drops, and one or two applications is usually enough. Ear drops are also available. Ear mite eggs take 21 days to develop into adult mites, which means that ear drops are often needed for around three weeks. It's really important to use ear drops as prescribed and for the recommended time period. Always consult your vet on the best and most suitable treatment to use.

Your vet will give your dog a treatment to kill their ear mites (likely to be a tablet or ‘spot-on’). Your dog may need more than one treatment to make sure all their ear mites are dead. Ear mites are contagious so you will also need to treat any other dogs and cats in your household. It’s likely that your vet will prescribe your dog an ear cleaner for use at home. Once a day ear cleaning will help clear out any excess wax and debris from your dog’s ears. Medicated eardrops If necessary, your vet will prescribe eardrops to help with inflammation, pain and infection. If your dog is given eardrops, make sure you follow the instructions and complete the course (even if your dog’s ears seem better part way through). Regularly treating your dog for fleas is the best way to prevent ear mites. Many of the products we use to kill fleas or other parasites also kill ear mites. There are many products on the market that claim to kill ear mites, but those available without a prescription are usually less effective than a licenced product from your vet. We recommend seeing your vet if you suspect your dog or puppy has ear mites – they will provide you with an effective treatment and check their ears for any other problems.

To treat ear mites in dogs, the ears must be thoroughly cleaned and medicated. First, a dog’s ears are cleaned with an ear cleanser. Epi-Otic® Advanced is commonly used, but if the veterinarian diagnosed a secondary bacterial infection, TrizULTRA™+ Keto Flush, which is an antimicrobial ear cleanser, may be used instead. Topical and oral flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives are the main treatment for ear mites. Although these products are not directly labeled to be used for ear mites, they are highly effective. Examples of preventatives that are used include Bravecto® and Advantage Multi™. Topical ointment, such as Animax®, will be prescribed if the dog also has a bacterial or yeast infection. Dogs who are in a lot of pain or very itchy may benefit from topical or oral steroids, such as prednisone. A single treatment is typically effective at getting rid of the ear mites.

Your veterinarian will advise you about which insecticidal products are suitable. There are several ear medications licensed for the treatment of ear mites in pets. No medication can penetrate the eggs or pupae, so treatment is directed at killing the adult and larval forms. A variety of different treatment options are available to your veterinarian. Some are daily topical medications applied in the ear, or single-use products such as Milbemite®, Revolution®, Advantage Multi®, Simparica®, or Bravecto®. Your veterinarian will determine the most appropriate treatment for your pet. Cleaning the ears thoroughly will improve the effectiveness of any treatment. If the ears are very painful then cleaning may be delayed or performed under sedation.
