A few studies have shown that electrolyte drinks do hydrate better than regular water, but are they necessary. Electrolyte drinks can be beneficial for someone who is enduring very intense exercise or when it is extremely hot in the workout environment. Electrolyte drinks can also be beneficial for someone who is very ill and is experiencing prolonged sweating, vomiting, or diarrhea. If you are not sick, and only working out for an hour or less, water will work just fine for recovery. The main electrolytes in the body include Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Phosphate, Chloride, and these electrolytes are important for regulating the balance of fluids inside and outside of cells. Electrolyte drinks are not meant to be casually consumed throughout the day as if they’re water. Due to their high electrolyte content, drinking these beverages every day when there has not been a loss of electrolytes, could result in toxicities of different electrolytes.

Water is a healthy and cheap choice to keep you hydrated, but other drinks can also count towards your fluid intake. The Eatwell Guide recommends that people should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all count. You may need to drink more fluids if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, in a hot environment, physically active for long periods, ill or recovering from illness. Water is the best way to replace lost fluids. If you don't like the taste of water, try sparkling water, no added sugar squash, or add a slice of lemon or lime.

Nothing can ever hydrate you as effectively as water, despite the claims made. Water should always be your primary source of hydration and you should aim to drink two litres a day. However, there are a couple of things you can do to boost and prolong your hydration, particularly after exercise. Coconut water is nature’s own, great-tasting ‘sports’ drink and an excellent source of hydration. It contains naturally occurring potassium, sodium, magnesium, phosphorous and calcium, so it works to replenish the electrolytes we lose when we sweat. These tiny seeds can hold 10-12 times their own weight in water and are also hydrophilic – this means they prolong hydration and retain the electrolytes in our fluids. If you struggle to drink the recommended two litres of water, try mixing it up with a herbal tea or warm lemon water which is great for digestion.
