When your dog has a tick, the best thing to do is to remove it safely. You should always speak to your vet if you’re concerned about a tick. How to remove a tick: identify, before you get to work, make sure it’s a tick you’re dealing with and not something else, like a lump or nipple. Never pull, crush, squeeze or burn a tick, doing this can push blood back into your dog, increasing disease risk. Clean the affected area with warm, salty water and monitor your dog for any signs of illness. If your dog finds it hard to cope, or if you’re worried about removing a tick yourself, speak to your vet for more advice. If a tick’s head is left in your dog’s skin, it can lead to infection, speak to your vet if you face this issue when trying to remove a tick.

The site of the bite should be cleaned with soap and water. Tick bites aren’t typically itchy, so if you find your pup scratching at an old tick bite wound, it is a sign that an infection may have developed. Tick bite wounds can be cleaned gently with antiseptic wipes and sprayed with antimicrobial spray. If it worsens or doesn't show signs of initial improvement in one or two days, seek care from your veterinarian. These bumps often appear at the site of a tick bite or tick removal and resolve on their own over a few days. Do not use human-grade insect repellant for dogs. Many are highly toxic to pets.

The majority of the time, tick bites will not harm your pet. Rarely, bacterial infections or abscesses will develop at the site of a bite. This is more likely to occur if a tick has been improperly removed, with part of the tick being left in the skin. The easiest way to remove a tick is by twisting it off using a special tick remover. Properly removing a tick in this way reduces the risk of leaving the tick’s mouthparts still attached. Ticks should never be removed by squeezing or pulling, nor by being burnt. If you are unsure or worried that your pet has a tick, book an appointment with your local Goddard vet.
