The best way to keep fleas at bay is to treat your puppy regularly with a good quality flea treatment. Although the summer is the most common time to see fleas, vets also see peaks in flea populations in winter, when central heating tends to warm up houses. This means that flea protection should be given year-round, not just seasonally, throughout your pet's life. Your vet will help advise you on when to start flea protection, but for most puppies the first treatment can occur once they are six to eight weeks old. The exact age will depend on the type of flea treatment chosen and the weight of your puppy. Treat pets with flea treatment regularly going forward.

Once every month, you should treat your pet for fleas, and every two to three months, or even more frequently, for worms. Depending on your pet's lifestyle, talk to your vet about the best course of action. The flea treatments we advise kill existing fleas quickly and protect your dog for 4 weeks. Every month they should be treated with spot-on treatment and checked to make sure there are no signs of fleas.

This will vary from product to product and it is important that you read the product guidelines. Different products also have different lengths of intervals between treatments, so it is important to ensure you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and seek guidance from your vet. Due to the flea life cycle, new fleas may carry on emerging in the home for six weeks or longer after initial application of an effective flea treatment to your pet; therefore more than one treatment may be required. Regular use of an effective flea product will prevent re-infestation. The flea life cycle can take as little as 12 to 14 days or as long as 180 days. Under typical household conditions, a complete life cycle usually takes three to six weeks.
