If your dog is producing enough blood to cause a mess you may want to restrict her to easy- to -clean, un-carpeted floors. Unless you intend breeding, it is best to have her spayed. Spaying will prevent her from going into heat. Female dogs do not produce very much blood however, and in a small dog you may not even notice the bleeding. Just leaving her outside is a bad idea unless you want her to have male visitors. While your bitch is in heat it's inadvisable to leave her unsupervised outside, and you'll need to keep her on the lead at all times while on walks.

Dog diapers used during this time can reduce rug and floor stains from blood. Confinement to a room, garage or outside run may be preferable for dogs with a lot of vaginal bleeding. This is the messiest time of the heat cycle due to the bleeding. You may want to avoid walking your dog around the neighborhood during this period as intact males can smell an in heat dog up to 5 miles away. Extra precautions should be taken to prevent females from escaping or males entering the yard.

You can’t, so don’t try to. We recommend having your dog neutered at a time that’s right for them, as it prevents bleeding. During this time, your dog will likely bleed for around 7 to 10 days. Some dogs bleed heavily, while others bleed very little. stick to their routine, a change of routine, e.g. locking them in the kitchen so they don’t bleed on the carpet, can cause distress. if you are restricting certain areas of the house, introduce this in advance so it’s not new to your pup.
