My dog has allergies and has been on meds for them but they aren’t helping much. He constantly scratches all day and now has a hot spot on his tail which he keeps gnawing at. He has an appointment today at petco for his bath and hair cut. I’m just curious if they will still groom him because of the hot spot. It’s pretty red. His fur really needs to be cut badly and I’m unable to do it myself.

If poor grooming is the cause, seek an experienced professional groomer that uses fear free techniques. Clipping the hair away from the hot spot and the surrounding area can be very helpful, especially if your dog has a thick coat. The hot spot will heal more quickly if the hair is removed so that the lesion can dry properly. Grooming may be painful so your dog may need to be sedated. The first step in treating hot spots is to stop the self-mutilation. Often, it takes a combination of all options to stop the trauma.

Hotspots in Dogs are a common skin condition. Dog hotspots are an area of infected skin that looks red or moist and is sometimes raised. Your dog will experience them as itchy and sometimes painful patches and will often try to sooth hotspots with licking or biting. The best thing to do when you notice a hotspot is to book an appointment with your vet and try to stop your dog scratching too much. Treating a hotspot: Trim the area around the hotspot and clean with a mild antiseptic. Keeping your dog healthy and well groomed will help in the prevention of hotspots appearing in the first place.

Can a dog get a hot spot so quickly.
Could it be something else.
Yesterday it was hot so he was playing with the hose water and got wet and we didn’t dry him very thoroughly.
Could that have anything to do with it.
I’ve never had a dog before ranger just cats, I’m worried about this big spot.
He was fine when we brought him home, she didn’t notice anything besides the little red spots right under his nose.
Around 8pm I noticed him itching his neck and he usually doesn’t itch like that so we checked and I saw some blood and an almost quarter size chunk of fur missing.
There was nothing like that at 1pm.
