Grooming helps to keep dogs cool As the weather warms up, regular grooming will help your dog to regulate their temperature and prevent heatstroke. Although dogs don’t sweat through their skin like humans, a tangle free coat will be beneficial in hot weather. Summer baths have added benefits All dog’s need a regular bath, and a summer bath is a great opportunity to take this outdoors. An outdoor bath doesn’t simply mean hosing them down though, you can’t control the temperature of the water from a hose and if it’s freezing cold it’ll be too much of a shock for your dog and could take the fun out of bath time. Take your time and get the water temperature right and it will help cool them down as well as keep them clean and fresh.

If your dog is showing symptoms of heatstroke then you need to treat it as an emergency and call your vet. There are some initial steps you can take to help cool the dog down: Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock – you could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over him/her, or use a spray filled with cool water and place your dog in the breeze of a fan. Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water. Continue to douse your dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that he/she begins to shiver. Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer, and later in the season, if necessary.

One important thing to check when bathing your dog in a heatwave is making sure the water is not too warm. The bath should be cooler than 37C and anything that feels warm on our skin is usually a bit hotter than this. Temperatures over 37C can increase the dog's heart rate, which is not good for puppies and older dogs in particular. You should also avoid getting water in the dog's nose and ears. Make sure the water is cool enough before bathing your dog.

Regular grooming in warmer weather can help brush away any dead or excess hair, and matts and knots, leaving your dog with a less dense coat. Groom your dog regularly. Never place a damp towel over your dog as this can trap in heat. Give your pet damp towels to lie on or an ice pack wrapped in a towel. You could also freeze a Kong toy full of treats and water. Use frozen toys, paddling pools, or water sprinklers to entertain and cool your dog down. But remember not all dogs like water, so don’t force them if they don't want to.

Dogs will pant and get hot and distressed in very warm water so keep a bucket of cooler water to add to the bath if needed. Water temperature should be lukewarm to warm water depending on the ambient temperature. Do NOT over bath your dog. Too frequent washing will dry the skin and breakdown the skin’s natural defense barriers to bad bacteria and allergens. Fortnightly or monthly wash is adequate unless Fido has rolled in something particularly bad.

Never dunk them in water or force under a hose as this may cause shock. Give your dog a brush to remove excess fur and you can clip some dog coats. For an extra cool down, brush with a cool slightly damp towel to help cool them off.
