Not getting enough fluids can lead to dehydration. Daily fluid intake is important to stay hydrated. Most people should aim to drink enough during the day so their pee is a clear pale yellow colour. The Eatwell Guide recommends that people should aim to drink 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day. You may need to drink more fluids if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, in a hot environment, physically active for long periods, or ill or recovering from illness. Water is a healthy and cheap choice to keep you hydrated, but other drinks can also count towards your fluid intake. We also get some fluids from the foods we eat. Drink extra fluids if you've been sweating from physical activity, or if you're unwell – water is the best way to replace lost fluids.

Good hydration is important for all age groups and is something for everyone to consider. If dehydration is left untreated, it can become severe. Severe dehydration is a medical emergency and requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of severe dehydration include – feeling unusually tired (lethargic) or confused not passing urine for eight hours a weak pulse a rapid pulse fits (seizures) a low level of conciousness. If severe dehydration is not treated immediately it can lead to complications such as secondary UTI symptoms and falls due to dizziness. Severe dehydration can be life threatening, particularly for older people. Anyone can become dehydrated, but some groups are particularly at risk. These include babies and infants – they have a low body weight and are sensitive to even small amounts of fluid loss. Other symptoms of dehydration include – pain when urinating dry mouth, lips or eyes thirst dizziness headaches tiredness lack of concentration.

Drinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being well-hydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. You might say we are malhydrated, because we drink so much soda and fruit juice and other sugar-sweetened beverages, and by that I mean we drink beverages that harm our health. Experts recommend drinking roughly 11 cups of water per day for the average woman and 16 for men.
