Your pet may be quieter than usual, less interested in playing, and may wish to be left alone. This is OK – They will come to you for attention when they feel like it. Provide them with a comfortable place to lie down and rest. Check on your pet every so often, just to make sure they are comfortable, but try to disturb them as little as possible. Make sure that they have access to water and food, but don’t be alarmed if they have a reduced appetite for a day or so after vaccination.

Fortunately, most pets need no special care following vaccination as they show no obvious response and go about their lives normally. However, a small percentage of pets may show a mild response and look ‘off colour’ for a day or two. You may notice that they have lost their appetite and just want to lie around and rest. Avoid patting or playing with your pet as they may wish to be left alone. They will come to you for attention when they feel like it. Check on your pet every so often, just to make sure they are comfortable, but try to disturb them as little as possible. Provide your pet with a warm, cosy place to lie down and rest. Make sure that they have access to water and their favourite food, but don’t be alarmed if they are not very hungry.

Do not vaccinate a dog and then go off to work leaving the dog home by itself. The dog should be monitored after its shots. Shots are best done in the morning when you have all day to watch the dog for reactions. After a dog is given a shot you should not leave the vet's office right away. You should have Benadryl on hand for the rest of the day.

Millions of pets are vaccinated each year, and the vast majority experience no problems. However, it is common for many pets to experience mild side effects following vaccination, similar to those that humans experience. Some of the most common mild side effects that can be seen after immunization include: Redness, mild swelling, and tenderness at the vaccination site Decreased activity levels (fatigue) Loss of appetite Low-grade fever. If any of these signs lasts more than 24 hours or if your pet appears extremely uncomfortable, notify your veterinarian. Closely monitor your pet, and report any problems to your veterinarian as soon as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them with your veterinarian.
