You should be able to see a small amount of light brown wax. To remove the ear wax from your dog’s ear, follow the instructions on your chosen dog ear cleaner. If you are using Beaphar Ear Cleaner, prime the pipette and squeeze 6–8 drops at the entrance to the ear canal. Gently massage the ear from the outside to help the cleaning process. Please avoid putting anything down the ear canal as this can damage the ear lining and eardrum. Only wipe the areas you can see. Clean your dog’s ears at least twice a week to keep on top of wax and debris.

If your pet is producing a lot of ear wax, this can build up and become really uncomfortable. Your pet will need two types of ear drops: A drop to help break up all the extra wax in their ear A drop to treat the cause of the problem. These drops will help to bring down the swelling in your pet’s ear and make it less painful for them. It’s important to give these drops to your pet properly so they go right into their ear. Sometimes, our pets can develop serious ear problems that don’t go away easily with treatments like ear drops or tablets. If you pet’s ear problem doesn’t clear up after treatment, you vet might want to have a proper look at the inner ear and try to flush out the problem with a water solution.

The ear wax should be a yellow color. The problem can usually be solved by cleaning your dog’s ears with a veterinarian-approved routine ear cleaner. Your dog’s ears should be cleaned with a solution specifically developed for this purpose. Do not use home recipes for ear cleaning that contain hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, or alcohol, as they may irritate the ears or worsen an existing problem. Cotton-tipped swabs should not be used to clean your dog’s ears. They might have the unintended effect of pushing debris further into the ear canal. For dogs with excess ear hair—which can trap odors and ear wax—you may want to consult a groomer and have some of your dog’s ear hair removed. Use caution and seek veterinary guidance for the best ear cleaners. Dogs suffering from ear infections can have an underlying ear drum rupture and certain chemicals shouldn’t be used with this condition.

To get brown gunk out of a dog's ear, if your vet prescribes ear drops, you may need to apply them for a few weeks. Make sure you have the ear drops close by. Then, hold your dog's head still, thumb between eyes and nose, fingers wrapped under your dog's jaw. Lift your dog's ear and clean away easy-to-reach wax with a cotton ball and ear cleaning solution. Don't dig deep and don't use cotton swabs, which can damage the ear canal or pack wax or debris against the eardrum. Keeping your grip steady, place the nozzle of the ear drops at the opening of your dog's ear canal, angled toward their nose. Squirt in the prescribed number of drops. Keep hold of your dog's head so it can't shake out the medication, then spread the drops by folding your dog's ear down and gently massaging the cartilage at the base of the ear for 30 seconds. You can also remove visible dirt with a cotton ball soaked with a canine ear cleaning solution, or by wrapping a damp cloth around your finger and gently cleaning the outer ear.
