We currently alternate months between a sanitary/face trim and a full groom, but he's constantly getting poop stuck to his butt. Do sanitary grooms need to be more frequent? Should I be wiping his butt after every walk?

Although grooming requirements can vary among different dog breeds, a general guideline recommended by experts is to groom most breeds once a month. This regular grooming routine helps prevent matting and knots, which, if left untreated, can lead to skin irritation and infections. For short-coated dogs, a recommended grooming plan is Bathing: Once every 2-3 months. For double-coated dogs, the recommended grooming frequencies are Bathing and trimming: Shorter, denser coats, once every 2-3 months; longer, less dense coats, once a month with a light trim every 3 months. Breeds with curly or wavy coats require bathing and grooming: Once a month. Wire-Coated Dogs require regular brushing and combing, and consider the following grooming recommendations. Grooming is a preventive measure that should never be overlooked.

Dogs with longer haircuts, double coats, or long smooth hair should come in every 4-6 weeks, while dogs with shorter haircuts can go for longer with a sanitary trim in between haircuts. In general, we recommend that pup’s come in on a 4-6 week routine schedule depending on their breed & coat. For less active dogs, we suggest they come in for a bath every 6-8 weeks. More active dogs that often play outside, swim, get into mischief, or accompany you on runs and hikes should be coming in every 4 weeks. Ultimately, though, it is best to ask a groomer how often your pup should be coming in since every hairstyle is different.

How often you get your dog’s coat trimmed will depend on lots of things – the lifestyle you lead, how often they get out and about, their age, coat type, breed and more. Some breeds need their coats trimmed every few months, while others can go a bit longer. Depending on your dog’s breed, you may also need to visit a professional groomer to get their coat trimmed or stripped a few times a year. For breeds such as German Shepherds and spaniels with medium-length hair, you may need to brush a little more frequently, and visit a professional groomer to get their coat trimmed or stripped a few times a year. Dogs with an undercoat or a lot of excess hair may benefit from hand stripping, a process where the undercoat of a dog’s hair is removed using a hand stripping tool. For pet parents of long-haired breeds, you will need to think about much more regular grooming, and how often you get your dog’s coat trimmed will depend on the lifestyle you lead. Some different short hair breeds may need their undercoat to be trimmed.
