Do not allow dogs to play in harnesses either. Along with jaws and teeth, dog paws and legs can get caught in harnesses during play. If you would like to leave your dogs loose together in collars, be sure to use break-away collars. Never allow dogs to play in any type of corrective equipment including martingale collars, choke chains, or prong collars. Dog’s jaws and teeth can get caught easily. If the dogs enjoy playing mouth-wrestling games, take the collars off during play.

When you’re spending quality time at home with your best friend, it’s best to leave the harness off. Leaving your dog in a harness 24/7 can cause a number of problems including: Chafing, rubbing and sores, Discomfort and skin irritation, Restriction of your dog’s natural movement and flexibility, Hair loss and matted fur, Risk of the harness getting caught or stuck on something, Risk of undoing the training you’ve done with the harness. When should your dog wear his harness? While the answer to the question “can you leave a dog harness on all the time?” is a resounding no, there are still so many opportunities to make the most out of these useful accessories. Some top times to use a dog harness include: Walks, Car trips, Long hikes, Camping trips, Training, Any other outdoor activities which require leashing your dog. But you can take it to a range of environments from the wilderness to the local dog park to get the most out of your time spent with your pup.

Do not have anything on your dog that could either injure another critter or give something for other dogs to bite onto. Flat tags and collars are fine, but be aware of any collar with spikes, or anything that could accidentally injure another dog. Remove harnesses and prong collars.

Replace training collars with buckle collars or a harness before letting dogs loose to play—training collars can get caught in the teeth of other dogs, with dire consequences. Or even better, use a harness. Keep your dog on-leash until safely inside the park. Then remove your dog’s leash after you enter the off-leash area. Mixing on-leash and off-leash dogs can cause stress in the leashed dogs, which may lead to aggressive behaviour. Make sure your dog wears ID, either a tag or information on your dog’s collar.

When I am looking for a harness for a dog the most important thing after correct sizing that I look for is that the straps of the harness sit far away from the dog's joints. If the straps sit on or too close to the dog's shoulders it can impede movement which at best will be uncomfortable for your dog and at worst could cause future injury and keep young dogs from developing properly. There are some dogs out there who are so sensitive to wearing equipment that they will shut down completely when you put a harness on them. This can sometimes be modified with proper conditioning to the equipment, but if it cannot then this is one instance where I feel using a flat collar is appropriate. The importance of harness fit is crucial as a poorly fitted harness can cause hair loss and irritation, as seen in the example of the Easy Walk harness. Not all harnesses are created equal, and you want to be careful when choosing the equipment you use with your dog.
