Try a warm Epsom salt soak. Add a ¼ cup of Epsom salts to a litre of warm water, and immerse the paws one by one. Do this for up to 10 minutes per foot, up to 3 times a day. Remember to dry the feet thoroughly and in between the toes to prevent infection. Regular maintenance on your pet’s feet is worth the hassle. Teaching your dog or cat from an early age to be tolerant to you handling and caring for his/her feet is a huge convenience later on.

Also, she tells you that you should soak her foot in salt water for ten minutes twice a day. For a week. After ten minutes of treating your dog like she’s the Queen of Sheba, remove the bag. Trust me, after a few days of this your dog will decide that foot baths are the best thing ever and start to expect demand them every evening. And another update: For anyone wondering, after more than two weeks of foot soaking, Juno completely lost the nail on the injured toe. She still runs circles every time I go near the cupboard with the Epsom salts in it, thinking it’s time for her pedicure.

Paw soaks are actually recommended at least once per day if your dog does not wear booties outside. Some people actually have a little “dog paw soaking factory” that the dogs walk through then they walk on a towel or rug, or they use a paw plunger that will squeegee off the excess water and debris. The Responses we received definitely covered a spectrum from those who never wipe or soak their dog’s paws to doing it after every single trip outside. Weather was the most common reason to wipe the paws. If these problems persist, it could be a food intolerance instead. Wiping or rinsing the paws should reduce these signs. We understand if soaking is not going to work for your household. The majority of you use a towel or washcloth. When you are wiping off your dog’s paws, really get in the crevices.
