A long leash can be over 30 feet long and isn’t generally used for everyday walks. Short leashes give you increased control over your dog during walks. They’re usually about 4 feet long or shorter, and can be used for everyday walks. Many individuals with service dogs also use short leashes on everyday walks while utilizing a service dog harness. Short leashes are also great for training a service dog to stay close to your side while walking or to obey the “heel” command. Slip leads combine both the collar and the leash into one slipover piece. They’re an excellent tool for training a dog not to pull against the leash when on walks. The goal of a slip lead isn’t to use it as your go-to walking leash, but to retrain your dog for proper leash behavior.

Service dog handlers will be holding the leash for long periods of time, so it’s critical to select a leash width and material that is easy on their hands. Wider leashes and softer materials are usually easier for people who have limited dexterity. In most cases, the leash needs to be between 4 and 6 feet long. Leashes that are too long can get caught up in wheelchairs and walkers. On the other hand, a leash that is too short can make it difficult for the dog to move away from the owner to perform a task like a Retrieve. If a service dog uses a harness with a handle, such as the kind used for balance work, a leash is still needed, but in most cases it needs to be shorter or of a lighter material. For some clients, hands-free leashes are a great option. There are two general types, those that go around the person’s waist and the ones that can be draped over a shoulder.
