Heatstroke occurs when your dog cannot lose excess heat, causing the body to reach dangerous temperatures. Being in an environment that is too hot or humid can lead to heatstroke, especially if your dog is running or playing. Things that can induce a sun stroke in dogs can include: A hot day, Being walked in warm temperatures. Never leave your pet unsupervised outside on hot days. If you go out on a hot day, leave your pet indoors in a room with a fan or air conditioning. If your pet is playing or sitting outside, ensure they have access to fresh water, shade and shelter away from direct sunlight. Walk your dog in the morning or later at night to avoid dangerous temperatures - or not at all, if the temperatures are dangerously high. If you can't hold your hand on the hot pavement for longer than five seconds, it is too hot for your dog to walk on. Leave walks to the early morning and late evening when it is cooler and make sure to pack a water bottle so your dogs can drink occasionally.

It’s easy for our pets to overheat in warm weather. Unlike us, they can’t remove layers when it gets hot, and they don’t always have an option to move themselves to cooler places or avoid the sun. Animals are unable to cool down by sweating as humans do, so they are less able to regulate their body temperature. Dogs and cats can suffer from heatstroke, a life-threatening condition where the body temperature increases to a point where serious consequences, including organ failure and even death, can occur. Exercising excessively in warm weather, or being left in a warm or humid environment that is poorly ventilated can cause animals to quickly overheat. Make sure your pet always has access to a cool shaded area, both indoors and outside. Restrict exercise on warm days, dogs should be walked early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the hottest part of the day. Never leave pets in a car or a hot room.
