The majority of breeds with this hair type should be at the groomers every 4 to 6 weeks, with only exceptionally short hair cuts being able to leave it to 8 weeks until they return. Any hair longer than 1/2 Inch needs to be brushed through at least 4 times a week and hair longer than an inch should be brushed through every day. At Love My Hound we have many poodle mix clients on regular maintenance grooms every 3 weeks for a wash, condition, brush through and light trimming work, returning in another 3 weeks to have The Ultimate Full Groom within which we style their full body haircut. Always remember, severe matting can cause many serious complications, so with these breeds it is imperative to have a planned grooming schedule.

The amount you should groom your dog is unique to them. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer as different breeds have different needs. To figure out your dog’s grooming needs, you’ll need to do a bit of research on their particular breed. The optimal grooming schedule can vary depending on things like coat length, fur texture, hair type and age. Many dogs with short hair usually only need brushing once a week if they have a healthy coat. For breeds such as German Shepherds and spaniels with medium-length hair, you may need to brush a little more frequently. For pet parents of long-haired breeds, you will need to think about much more regular grooming, this might involve daily brushing to smooth hair and prevent matting. How often you get your dog’s coat trimmed will depend on lots of things – the lifestyle you lead, how often they get out and about, their age, coat type, breed and more. Some breeds need their coats trimmed every few months, while others can go a bit longer.

Aim for regular grooming sessions at home and bring your smooth or short-coated dog into the salon every 3 months. Aim to bring these breeds in for a spa visit every 8-10 weeks. These breeds should come in for a professional groom every 6-8 weeks. Typically, these breeds will need professional grooming every 6-12 weeks depending on fur length. Breeds with Long Coats should ideally be professionally groomed every 8-12 weeks. Golden Doodles, Cockerpoos, Cavapoos and Labradoodles require regular help, so should be groomed professionally every 6-8 weeks. How often you take your dog to the groomers will depend on their breed.
