He’d definitely have to be shaved down, the poor thing. I haven’t seen him in person, but my friend says he’s covered in mats on his entire body. Feet, legs, undercarriage, everything. She can’t even get close to him because he smells so bad. I worked as a bather for a while, and even Cocker Spaniels that were regulars could get matted quickly. So I can only imagine how bad he is. And the boyfriend can’t even remember the last time the dog has been groomed, let alone taken to the vet. In the year that my friend has known the mom, the dog has never been taken to a groomer or had any at home care.

This habit can lead to ear mites as well as ear infections, which can cause a lot of discomfort in your dog.

Put simply, bad things. One of the most common consequences of not grooming your dog is that their coat can become matted. A matted coat basically means that there are knots in your dog's hair. Matting can cause serious challenges for your dog including reduced circulation on their skin, hot spots, bacteria, infections, scabs/cuts, and more. On top of that, if you don't take care of a matted coat your dog can experience pain on their skin, and their skin and even become raw and inflamed. Additionally, if you don't groom your dog and their coat becomes matted, often the only solution is to shave your dog. Not fun!
