Scenthounds are generally very social with people as well as dogs, and are not renowned for being distrustful or wary of strangers. They have open, friendly personalities and are generally keen to meet newcomers, although they do bond strongly with their main carers too. Scenthounds can fairly be classed as independent dogs, and while they do of course require adequate care, lots of attention, plenty of walks and mental stimulation, they are also good at entertaining themselves and are not among the most clingy and demanding of dogs. If you enjoy games of hide and seek and treasure hunting, life with a scenthound will be ideal for you. Scenthounds require provision to be made for significant amounts of time outdoors, and a couple of short supervised walks per day will not prove sufficient. Long walks at a steady pace over wide ranging terrain are ideal for keeping the scenthound occupied, but they are also equally happy to entertain themselves outdoors if you are able to make provision for them to do so, letting them stretch their legs and keep their minds engaged without quite so much legwork required by yourself.

Then after suitable exercise, your hound will love sleeping at your feet, in front of the fire or on the sofa beside you. Most will also enjoy stroking and gentle, relaxing grooming sessions. The bond between you and your Scent Hound can be strengthened in a number of ways: play, training and exercise are all great for your dog's emotional and physical health, but they'll also love just spending time together. If your dog's been adequately exercised - mentally and physically - a Scent Hound will enjoy simply snoozing at your feet in the evening while you read or watch TV. Your dog will also enjoy being stroked and brushed all over. Daily grooming will also ensure that any debris picked up from forays through the undergrowth is removed, and that any coat and skin-related health issues can be noticed and treated early on. As well as that, the act of stroking and gentle brushing will be relaxing and strengthen the bond between you. If you have two or more Scent Hounds in your home, they are likely to play with each other and be less reliant on you to provide entertainment.

They absolutely can. The Beagle is nearly always in the top 10 UK dog breeds due to its sweet, easy going and adaptable nature. The beagle, like most other scent hounds, typically love their families and are playful with other dogs. Similarly, the basset hound is pretty laid back and easy to live with. They are highly trainable and easy to motivate with smelly treats. Unfortunately this means we have also seen an increase in over breeding and poor breeding practices in general. If you’re looking to add a scent hound, particularly a Daschund, to your family, ensure they have been well bred or come from a reputable rescue. The down sides Whilst scent hounds are fantastic dogs, they do, like all breeds, have their downsides. They can be very noisy. They make a very distinctive baying noise, similar to howling, when playing or stressed out. Many are prone to barking a lot as that is a way that they would communicate to their humans that they have located prey or vermin. Also, their overwhelming sense of smell can get them into trouble- they are essentially deaf when that nose is down! Given quite how strong a bloodhounds nose is, you might find it difficult to get them motivated and engaged with anything else.

The Bavarian Mountain Scent Hound is calm and balanced, devoted to its owner, and reserved with strangers. He is a sound, self-assured, unafraid, biddable dog, neither shy nor aggressive.
