Animals often hide pain, and being able to recognise signs of pain in animals is an essential aspect of responsible animal husbandry. Animals hide pain, hiding pain is a beneficial evolutionary trait that animals have developed over millennia. Animals do not express their pain as humans do, while they can clearly express acute pain by vocalising, animals express chronic pain only subtly, mainly through behavioural changes. Dogs and cats, for instance, might engage in abnormal behaviours such as constant licking or excessive cleaning. Unfortunately, some signs of pain are also misinterpreted by pet owners. A slowed movement or laborious standing are often attributed to old age, but may actually indicate an underlying medical condition. Pet owners must therefore be proficient in identifying signs of pain to ensure that the underlying condition is addressed as soon as possible. Observe your pet and identify what makes up its normal behavioural repertoire.

Pain is difficult to recognise in animals, because they cannot tell us in words what is hurting them. Although all animals experience pain, the expression of pain varies with age and species, as well as between individuals. Every dog is different and it is difficult to generalise about pain symptoms. Puppies and older dogs may not express their pain as clearly as other animals. Cats most certainly are different to dogs and they are more likely to hide their pain. For that reason, spotting signs of pain in cats is often more difficult than it is in dogs. A lack of obvious signs does not mean your dog is not experiencing pain. If the injury, illness or experience is one that sounds painful to you, go with the assumption that it may also hurt your dog and seek help from your vet. Even subtle changes in behaviour are reasons to contact your vet, because these are the first signs of illness and pain.

No sign can by itself be regarded as diagnostic of pain and may also occur in conditions in which pain is unlikely to be a feature. An animal in pain, regardless of species, usually displays one or more of the following signs. Signs of Pain include attraction to the area of pain, increased skeletal muscle tone, altered electroencephalogram response, increased blood pressure and heart rate, pupillary dilation, change in the respiratory pattern. Such signs are often associated with what is believed to be a painful condition. In compiling general guidelines it has become clear that there are species-specific signs of pain, which should be taken into account when making a practical assessment.

Recognizing pain in animals is a challenge because animals cannot communicate the same way people do. However, there are some species-specific behaviors that can indicate pain and help us to recognize it. Recognizing pain-induced behaviors is difficult or impossible without knowing the normal behaviors of a particular species or breed. Behavioral changes associated with pain may be subtle and not easily recognized during routine checkups or examinations in animals. Many animals mask their pain with normal behaviors. For instance, dogs may wag their tails and greet people in spite of being in pain. Prey animals tend to hide their pain, making recognition of pain even more difficult in these species. In general, signs of chronic pain are less obvious and harder to recognize than signs of traumatic or surgical pain.

Dogs are notoriously good at hiding signs of pain, which is great as a survival tactic in the wild but not so good for the owners of domesticated dogs wanting to ensure their dog’s quality of life and wellbeing. As a descendant of wild wolves, our domesticated dog breeds are practised at hiding signs of pain and discomfort, but there are still some important clues you can look for. Will these signs always be noticeable? Not necessarily. It’s important to consider that often only a few of these behaviours are seen when an animal is in pain, and whilst they may be noticeable in an acutely painful condition, in more progressive or chronically painful conditions, these behaviours may be much subtler. What’s important to look for is any pattern to changes in your dog’s behaviour. You can monitor your pet to see: Do certain behaviours become common after exercise? Are behaviours more pronounced in the morning or evening? Are you more likely to see these behaviours after a longer walk at the weekend rather than a shorter one during the week?

But most people don’t actually know the signs of discomfort in animals. And the other tricky thing is that dogs and cats tend to hide their pain. They are wired to do so because out in the wild, if they show weakness, they could be targeted as an easy kill by a predator. While it can be a little easier to identify a dog in pain than a cat, many pets try to put on a strong face for their humans. They may try to hide limps, and so on. So, with both cats and dogs, it is important to be attentive to very subtle changes. Changes in their behavior are the main indicators of pain in both cats and dogs. Changes in behavior also tell us about improvement or progression.
