If the skin is damaged an infection can take hold. Bacterial infections often cause red, circular patches on the skin that sometimes smell pungent. Hot spots are patches of red, infected skin, they appear very quickly, look wet and often weep. Yeast infections may cause your dog to develop a greasy coat and a sour smell. Contact your vet if your pet has a skin problem that doesn’t clear up in a few days. If you see blood or pus coming from their skin it is important to see a vet as soon as possible.
Contact your vet ASAP if you suspect your dog is having a severe allergic reaction – this is an emergency.
Dogs with Cushing’s are more likely to get skin infections.

Regardless of the reason, skin infections require swift action as they can cause itching and pain. Some dogs are more vulnerable to develop bacterial skin infections than others. Symptoms of skin infections include redness, itching, hair loss, bumps, pustules, and spots. If you suspect your pet has a skin infection, contact us for a diagnosis and treatment plan. We may be able to diagnose by looking; however, a conclusive diagnosis requires the examination of hair, discharge, and skin cultures. Bathing too frequently can irritate your dog’s skin, so the right balance is critical. Dog hygiene can be enhanced with the use of rinses and sprays in between baths. You can implement a routine where you inspect your dog for any visual signs of infection frequently.

A severe allergic reaction is an emergency so get in touch with our Vets asap on 01327 350239. Skin conditions can be painful and uncomfortable and some can also be symptoms of a more serious health condition. Skin wounds can easily become infected, besides being painful and uncomfortable. An infection can take hold if the skin is damaged, usually from scratching. Moist dermatitis, or ‘hot spots’, can appear very quickly – they are red skin patches of infected skin that look wet and may weep.
