The time between check-ups can vary from 3 months to 2 years, depending on how healthy your teeth and gums are and your risk of future problems.
After your check-up, your dentist will recommend a date for your next visit.
The time to your next check-up could be as short as 3 months or as long as 2 years.
Generally, the lower your risk of dental problems, the longer you can wait before your next check-up.
So people with good oral health will probably need to attend only once every 12 to 24 months, but those with more problems will need check-ups more often.

The NHS dentist 2-year rule is a guideline that ensures you visit your NHS dentist regularly. If you don’t attend a dental check-up within a two-year period, you risk being removed from the NHS patient list. This rule helps maintain your access to NHS dental care and encourages you to visit your dentist regularly to maintain your oral health. Patients who do not attend the practice for a routine clinical examination, Have two consecutive failed attendances, or Have two short-notice cancellations (with less than 2 days’ notice), may be removed from our NHS register. Dental professionals recommend attending a routine examination every six months to maintain good oral health.

NHS dentistry has been under pressure for some time. NHS dental teams have been working hard to meet rising demand and although we have seen steady improvements in access, we know we need to do more. NHS dentists will be given a ‘new patient’ payment of between £15-£50 (depending on treatment need) to treat patients who have not seen an NHS dentist in two years or more. This will begin from March 2024 and is time limited to end of financial year 2024/2025. Recovering dentistry is a priority for the NHS and this plan is an important step towards transforming NHS dental services for the better. We expect to publish guidance and next steps for ICBs and contractors on the New Patient Premium within the next week as there are some key time sensitive actions which need to be taken to ensure smooth implementation from 1 March 2024.
