Hydrocortisone: on its own or in calamine lotion can be used on dogs, but before using any cream, salve or gel containing these ingredients with your dog, be sure to consult your vet. Lidocaine: numbing agent is another ingredient that can be used on dogs, but it's also important to consult with a vet before using it. Shea Butter Dry Dog Skin Treatment is one moisturiser you and your dog can share, humans use pure shea butter to soften dry, cracked elbows and heels, it moisturises and protects skin, and—best of all—it’s totally dog-safe when applied topically in small amounts. Coconut oil is one of nature’s safest, most effective moisturisers, humans have been using it for generations to soothe dry skin and hair and it’s just as useful for dogs. Olive Oil can be used as an external treatment, apply a small amount to your dog’s dry paws, nose and ears, and it’s also effective as part of your dog’s diet.

Clean the surface gently with a mild soap (such as Dove, Aveenobar, Cetaphil or Castile) or with an antibacterial cleaner such as chlorhexidine. Apply a first-aid cream, such as Neosporin (the cream, not the ointment). For healthy dogs, a generic 1% hydrocortisone cream from the human first-aid shelf is safe and usually effective. It will need to be applied 3-4 times a day. Note: For dogs that shouldn’t receive steroids, products that contain pramoxine (which provides temporary pain relief) will still work nicely. Many dogs benefit from either a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation and help with pain, or an antihistamine to reduce the inflammatory reaction. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories work well for dogs who need to avoid steroids.

Ointments, creams, and lotions are for external use only. Ointments have an oily base. Creams are non-greasy. Lotions are liquid preparations. Some veterinary preparations may be irritating to human skin or eyes. Be sure to follow all directions concerning application of the product, e.g., using gloves, avoiding the eyes, etc.
