Whilst there are many different types of joint disease in dogs, by far the most common cause of joint pain in middle to older aged dogs is osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative joint disease. The most commonly affected joints are the hips, knees (stifles), elbows and the joints in the lower back. It is the pain associated with these joints that cause the symptoms we see. Their statistics show 80% of dogs over the age of 8 suffer from arthritis and is, unfortunately, a major cause for elective euthanasia.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in dogs and has a significant impact on the welfare and quality of life of affected dogs. Age was confirmed as the strongest risk factor for OA diagnosis, and this was consistent across different breeds of different sizes. Higher adult body weight was identified as a risk factor. The study found that 23.9% of the dogs were diagnosed with OA during the study. Overall, this study confirms the importance of several key risk factors for osteoarthritis in dogs, including older age, higher body weight, gonadectomy and younger age at gonadectomy.

Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease diagnosed in dogs, and this study is the largest ever conducted into the condition in dogs under veterinary care – covering 455,557 dogs. Osteoarthritis poses considerable challenges to the welfare of dogs. The condition is progressive and leads to impaired joint function as well as pain, and particularly affects aging dogs. On average, dogs receive their first diagnosis by the age of 10.5 years. 2.5% of dogs involved in the study had osteoarthritis, which would equate to a total of around 200,000 dogs in the UK.
