A healthy routine for a dog includes a morning routine that starts with taking them outside to use the toilet as soon as you're up, followed by some playtime with their favorite dog toys. This gives you a chance to bond with your dog before starting the day. If you've decided to feed your dog two meals a day, the first meal should be given around 7:30, and about half an hour after they've finished their breakfast, take them outside for a walk and another opportunity to do their business if needed. Your dog should have access to fresh water throughout the day, and if you're at home, early afternoon is the time to refresh the water bowl. Most dogs will happily snooze away the afternoon, but leaving them on their own for long periods is unfair on your dog, so they will need a dog sitter or walker to give them some attention in your absence. In the evening, when you get home from work, be ready to make a fuss of your dog and give them their evening meal, followed by a dog walk to use up all the energy they have built up throughout the day. It's a good idea to leave some time between eating and exercise so that your dog can digest their food. Before bedtime, take them outside once more to relieve themselves, but don't encourage any play, as you don't want them to get too excited.

Routines are very important for young puppies, they not only help us to live together, but also provide your puppy with some structure in their daily life. This helps them to make sense of an otherwise unknown world and gives them some stability amongst all of the new adventures and encounters they are experiencing. A routine will also help you and your puppy establish toileting habits much quicker together. To help you make a start, you’ll find a suggested routine shown below and you will see that, as well as stimulation, learning, and play puppies need rest during the day. Of course the timings can be flexible to accommodate your own lifestyle but the alternating periods of activity and rest, as well as the staged intervals between meals, are an important part of a balanced and predictable routine that will help your puppy to develop healthily and become part of your family. A routine means that they can predict events, which is so important for their wellbeing and helps to avoid them feeling anxious. An established routine can also help avoid behaviour problems. You want to create and stick to a daily routine that looks the same for your pooch, even when it changes for you. You’ll need to consider: food, walks, going to the toilet, play, training, rest/relaxation, sleep, hanging out together. To do this, the days you are at home should be as similar to the days that you’re not. You should feed and walk your pooch at around the same time every morning. Then, they will be ready to settle down, so you can get on with your work if you are at home and not worry about them if you’re heading out to the office. It’s essential to give your pup plenty of time to rest throughout the day. Enable them to do this, by ensuring they have a cosy bed or den area of their own, where they can snooze undisturbed. In the evening, start by feeding them, again, around the same time that you would be arriving home from work, even on the days you are there. Give them time for their food to settle and then head out on a walk. Once back, you can hang out together. Create a routine that works for you and your pooch, then keep to it as closely as you can.
