When a dog or cat has hot spots, or allergic dermatitis, also known as atopic dermatitis, there is damage to the skin barrier. This causes their skin to become inflamed, red, dry, bumpy, and itchy. The skin itself may be dry and crusty or oily depending upon the dog. Scratch at their feet, flanks, ears, armpits, or groin, causing patchy or inconsistent hair loss and reddening and thickening of the skin. Dogs may also rub their face on the carpet; ear flaps may become red and hot. Because the wax-producing glands of the ear overproduce as a response to the allergy, they get bacterial and yeast infections of the ear. Cats and dogs with atopic dermatitis are prone to secondary skin infections, ear infections, and yeast infections and may have sensitive skin. Any skin infection or fleas will aggravate the allergic condition and may cause flare-ups in controlled cases.

Has your dog got red, inflamed, angry looking skin? Or do they have a rash? We often call these symptoms ‘dermatitis’. Fleas cause itchy, red, skin rashes, especially around the lower back. Mange is caused by the scabies mite, these tiny insects cause itchy, red and thickened with patchy hair loss. Demodex mites cause thickened, crusty skin and hair loss, especially on their head, feet and around their eyes. Ringworm causes circular patches of red, raised, hairless, itchy skin. Bacterial infections often cause red, inflamed circular patches on the skin that smell pungent. Hot spots tend to appear quickly and cause smelly, weepy, itchy skin. Yeast infections may cause your dog to develop a sour smell and a greasy coat. If your dog has developed a rash that looks like blood spots or bruising it could be a sign of a blood clotting disorder. Severe dermatitis around a dog's mouth.

Canine atopic dermatitis is an allergic skin condition in dogs that causes itching, which can lead to redness, fur-loss, rough or damaged skin. Symptoms of cAD include itchy skin, which may or may not look red or inflamed, and in severe cases the dogs affected skin may become damaged from scratching, become rough or scaly, and they may lose their fur in that area. In addition to scratching, itchy skin can cause dog to repeatedly lick the affected areas, which can cause the skin to darken in colour or become red and raw, or they may rub the affected areas. A dog with canine atopic dermatitis showing a red and itchy facial muzzle, with no fur loss or damaged skin. The skin between the toes is red, inflamed and broken from repeated licking. Often, the location of the signs, such as itching, rubbing, redness, can be very a very useful pointer towards identifying the correct disease, it's also important to note the areas affected, and where your dog scratches, rubs or licks.
