Every dog's daily schedule should include walking to ensure their physical and mental well-being. Typically, dogs require a minimum of one to two walks per day, unless advised otherwise by your veterinarian. It’s also important that your dog stays fit enough to enjoy their walks. If you think your dog is struggling, speak to your vet about how you can improve their diet and exercise routine. Can I just let my dog run in the garden? No, even if you have a big garden, it’s important to take your dog out for regular walks too. Walks give your dog a chance to sniff new smells, explore new places and meet new people and dogs – all of which are really important for their mental wellbeing and confidence. Exercise is an important factor in dog behaviour, as dogs with excess energy often become frustrated, stressed and find it difficult to cope. Having a good exercise routine may help to improve any unwanted behaviours, but is unlikely to fix the problem completely.

For dogs, increasing their daily exercise is a simple place to start. Aim to increase walks by 1/3, either by making existing walks longer, or adding an extra walk in to your routine. Dogs who have arthritis or are unfit may find it easier to add an extra short walk rather than increasing walk length. For dogs who are fairly active, consider adding or increasing the amount of time off lead during the walk, as this can significantly increase the mileage they cover. Don’t forget to consider the terrain as well; just like us, dogs have to exert more energy to move uphill or over uneven ground.

A good walk or walks every day can help to keep your dog mentally and physically healthy and will reduce unwanted behaviours based on anxiety and boredom. The amount of exercise a dog needs ultimately depends on the dog. Puppies and senior dogs have different exercise needs, very boisterous dogs will need to run off a lot more steam than more retiring doggos. To find out specifically how much exercise your individual dog should have per day, consult your vet. Remember to always consult your vet for the most accurate advice, as your dog may have needs that aren’t covered in our calculator.

For most overweight or obese dogs, providing they have normal heart and lung function and no other pre-existing medical conditions, we recommend starting with 30-minute walks at least five times a week. Ideally, you should walk for exercise seven days a week. A sample schedule follows: Week 1 30 minutes per day 10 minutes brisk followed by 20 minutes casual pace. Week 2 30 minutes per day 15 minutes brisk followed by 15 minutes casual pace. Week 3 30 minutes per day 20 minutes brisk followed by 10 minutes casual pace. Week 4 35-40 minutes per day 30 minutes brisk followed by 5-10 minutes casual pace. Week 5+ 35-60 minutes per day. Try to do two 20-30 minute walks per day: 15-25 minutes brisk followed by 5 minutes casual pace.
