It seems like on big dog subreddits they claim the dog is too big to be buckled in, and in small dog subreddits they claim ALL dogs should be buckled. Do you buckle your dogs in? Why or why not? What size/breed are they? I’ve been reading on breed specific subreddits and I realized that it’s a more controversial subject than I thought.

You need to keep your dog calm, make sure he has food and water, manage any motion sickness, stop regularly for potty breaks and get him settled in your destination without too much disruption or anxiety. That’s because car safety features are designed for the weight and body position of humans—not pets. Dogs who aren’t properly restrained pose great risks to human passengers in the event of a sudden stop, swerve or accident. In the event of a crash at 50 mph, a 10-pound, unrestrained dog generates 500 pounds of projectile force. In a 30-mph crash, an 80-pound dog would become a 2,400-pound flying projectile. Dog seat belts, Lund says, are best for larger dogs. While a dog seat belt harness is great for large dogs, dog car seats are ideal for small and medium dogs, Lund says. You want to find the best solution for your dog, family, and vehicle type. Like children, the safest place for a dog is to be buckled in the backseat—but if your backseat is full of human passengers, there are now some great options for the cargo area.

The first step is purchasing a crash tested harness, but the second step is understanding how to correctly strap your dog in for a road trip, using the harness. To learn how to use the Enhanced Strength Tru-Fit Dog Car Harness and buckle your dog up successfully, follow the directions and visual demonstrations below. The carabiner clip is the most important piece when attaching your dog's harness to the car's seat belt. Take the carabiner and attach it to both the waist and shoulder straps of the seat belt, as shown in the picture. Now, buckle the seat belt. Once the carabiner is connected to both the shoulder and waist strap of the seat belt, attach the carbiner through the top layer of webbing on the back strap on the harness. After following these 3 easy steps, your dog is now safely secured into the car and you are ready to go. Never attach the carabiner to the leash attachment. The metal ring is for using the harness with a leash only - it is not strong enough to hold during a crash. The Enhanced Strength Harness has multiple adjustment points to create the perfect, comfortable fit for your pup. It also functions well as a walking harness, so get your dog used to it by first taking your dog on walks, before testing it in the car.
