Sunscreen protects dogs from sunburn, just as it protects us, but human sunscreens aren’t generally safe for dogs. Some ingredients in human sunscreens can be toxic to dogs, and we don’t want to risk that. Apply a pet-safe sun cream (ideally at least SPF 15) to any areas that are lacking in pigment or more exposed. These include your dog’s ears, nose, belly and thighs.

While sunscreen is good for us, what about our pets. Skin cancer is seen in pets, but that doesn’t mean that sunscreen is necessarily the answer. Pets with white or light-colored fur tend to be more predisposed to skin cancer than other pets. But instead of using sunscreen, you should be mindful and limit their time in the bright sunshine during peak hours. The main ingredients to avoid when picking a sunscreen for pets are zinc oxide and a group of chemicals referred to as salicylates. If you do pick a veterinarian-approved sunscreen for your pet, make sure it does not contain zinc oxide, and make sure it has a low concentration of salicylates. The best way to keep your pet safe from the sun is to talk to your veterinarian to determine what products, if any, your pet may need.

Can you use human sun cream on pets? Some active ingredients in human sun cream are toxic to pets. For example, you’ll need to make sure that sun cream for your dog does not contain zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), as these ingredients are toxic to our furry friends. This is why we recommend buying pet-friendly sun cream. Sun cream made specifically for pets will help protect their skin against the sun. You can even get pet sunblock with a bitter taste to prevent your pet from licking it off. Many companies out there have sun cream specifically designed for pets. You’ll be able to find cat sun cream, dog sun cream and even horse sun cream. Just make sure the sun cream is pet/child safe, SPF30 or higher, and waterproof.
