I try to point out that leaving a dog or your pet home alone while you work a job is perfectly normal. Families and single individuals do it all the time. I don’t leave him alone for any more then I have too. I always walk and take him to the park to run before my work. Ensure access to toys and fresh water while I am gone. My big baby just sleeps the whole time when I go to work. I also know that he wants his alone time since we are together ALL the time and this helps gives him this. When I was able to bring him with me to my last job, he had slept the all time there as well. Not to mention, I had my baby for 5 years and I never had a problem with working and leaving him alone.

Many dogs are good at adapting to being alone for 8-9 hours while you are at work if they are provided with enough space to comfortably move around. Adult dogs are generally okay on their own for 4-6 hours a day. Once a dog can handle being alone for 4 hours, it should be able to manage 8 hours on its own. The Basset Hound, French Bulldog, Chihuahua, and Pugs are some of the breeds that are best at being left alone for long periods. If your dog doesn't like being left alone, or you are going to be away longer than 8 hours, you can bring your pup to a doggy daycare facility. Doggy daycare can provide your canine companion with the care and companionship they need when you are out of the house.

Every dog should be able to stay on his own all day without falling apart emotionally or becoming destructive. Start with just a minute or two and gradually extend the length of time as you become comfortable with his behavior while you’re out of sight. Watch for potty accidents, too, as these will tell you how long your dog can be left without needing to go outside. Give him a treat when you leave but not when you return. Make sure he has constructive ways to occupy his time when you’re not around. Stuff a Kong toy with enough goodies to keep him busy for hours. Fill a puzzle toy with his daily ration of kibble so he has to work for his meals. Hide treats or favorite toys around the house for him to find while you’re gone. Before leaving your dog alone, make sure any toys in the environment are indestructible. Depending on your dog’s activity level and athleticism and bladder control, bring in a dog walker to take him for a walk or run, or a pet sitter to play with him in your home.
