No, public liability insurance doesn’t cover employees. It only offers you protection against claims made by third parties. If you’re looking for protection to cover employees, then you’ll need employers’ liability insurance. Public liability insurance will help protect your business if a claim is made against you, e.g. if something happens at work that results in injury to a customer, a member of the public or damage to someone’s property. It’ll protect your business against damage and the cost of legal claims people make against you, if you’ve done something that’s resulted in injury to a member of the public or damage to their property. Product liability insurance offers protection if a product that you manufacture, sell, install, repair or alter causes injury or illness to a customer, or damages their property.

It’s particularly important for businesses that come into contact with the public, for example shops, restaurants, tradespeople and salons. Public liability insurance isn’t a legal requirement, although it may be required by your client contracts. Public liability insurance won’t cover compensation claims made by employees or former employees for injury that they’ve suffered in the course of their work. Public liability insurance doesn’t cover claims made by employees. It’s designed to cover compensation claims made by a third party – for example a client, a customer, a supplier, or another member of the public – because they’ve been injured or their property’s been damaged by your business. Public liability insurance is designed to cover members of the public rather than employees. Employers’ liability insurance is the insurance you need to cover injury or damage claims made by a member of staff. Some types of subcontractors count as employees for the purposes of the legislation, and part-time and temporary workers are also included.

Public liability insurance covers claims made against your business by clients, contractors, or members of the public for accidental injury or damage to their property. This insurance will cover the associated costs, including compensation payouts and legal fees such as the cost of defending yourself in court. Public liability cover ensures you’re protected for these instances and offers something different to other insurance types. For instance, professional indemnity covers claims of fault with your work and employers’ liability covers you specifically for claims from employees. Meanwhile, personal accident cover protects the business if you or a key team member suffer from an illness or injury and are unable to work, and office insurance protects the premises you work from.

Public liability insurance does not cover breach of contract. If your contract requires you to have it and you don’t, then you will be in breach of contract. This will be the case even if you had cover, but it has expired. The other party may be entitled to terminate the contract, and possibly bring a claim for damages against you. If you are operating as a limited company, your business will be responsible for paying court fees, medical expenses, and legal costs to all parties involved. If you are self-employed, you will be responsible for paying them. Court proceedings are notoriously slow and can take months to resolve. A solicitor may deal with some of the pre-trial court appearances and administration. However, if you don’t have a solicitor you will have to do this yourself.

Pre-existing issues aren’t typically covered. Our policies will only consider claims arising after it became active. Contractual Liabilities Damages related to any special contractual agreements or guarantees you provide directly to customers also fall outside our standard public liability cover. Accidents linked to dangerous substances like asbestos or involving hazardous waste disposal and pollution often aren’t included or have strict stipulations concerning their handling before an incident occurs. Vehicles requiring separate motor insurance Any vehicles driven that require their own motor insurance policies aren’t covered for third party injuries or damages within our liability protection. Property damage or injuries inflicted while breaking UK laws also can’t be claimed for through us either. Our insurers will refuse involvement in legal cases stemming from criminal behaviour.
