The only letters you should see on a five-generation pedigree from the Kennel Club are “FTCh”, which means field trial champion. You may also see the letters “FTW”, which means field trial winner, or “OFTW”, for open field trial winner. Although these dogs may well have gained these awards in official Kennel Club field trial competitions, they are not recognised at the Kennel Club and therefore not printed on the registration certificates. What is misleading, however, is that a lot of hand-written or computerised owners’ copies have abbreviations in front of the dog’s name – for example, FTAW (field trial award winner) or FTW (field trial winner).

FTW= Field Trial Winner
This is an abbreviation which has originally been used in the UK to indicate that a dog has already won an open field trial.
It has rather an informative value – an easy way to indicate that a dog already won a trial (or some cases having won even 2 or more trials, but not having the very good from the show yet to get the confirmation from the kennel club or the FCI for the champion title. )

FTW is first in an open stake. FTW is first in a novice stake, FTAW is the dog finishing a novice (or open) and not being quite good enough to win so getting a Certificate of merit. FTW means a real winner, i.e. a first place, With FTAW being any other place. You don't get anything pedigree-wise for novice stakes.
