However, many puppies go off their food when they’re teething because their gums hurt and their puppy teeth are becoming loose. So, if your puppy is reluctant to eat dry food this is probably why. Try mixing half the amount of their kibble with a wet food suitable for puppies to help soften and moisten the dry, harder food or simply try softening the dry food with warm water. This, unfortunately, means teething pain and a great desire to chew. The teething process for puppies lasts between 6-8 months, but again exact timelines will vary from dog to dog and can last up to 1 year. The desire to chew should lessen after 1 year of age.

She used to love her kibble. She loved eating and would scarf down her food but once she began teething she stopped eating out of her kongs and now grazes her food, taking her a very long time for her to finish her food, sometimes leaving a ton behind. She always eats at least a cup of kibble a day. I have been adding warm water to her kibble to make it softer and adding some food toppers and while it gets her to eat at first, she seems to lose interest in the toppers as well. Her vet has checked her and says she's fine. She's super energetic and loves to play but it makes me so anxious that she's lost her appetite.

Puppies do a lot of growing and changing from birth to their 6-month birthday, and their teeth play a large role in that. Teething puppies are more mouthy than usual as their baby teeth fall out and their adult dog teeth replace them. Teething pain may cause your puppy to become more mouthy or more destructive at home. This is a temporary period, and puppies need to be redirected to appropriate chewing opportunities, like toys. Taking care of a teething puppy involves offering lots of options for chewing—particularly soft toys, rubber toys, and chilled or frozen toys. Your puppy may prefer harder or softer items, depending on his teething pain. Cold items can help soothe any pain and inflammation, so try giving your pup chilled or frozen treats, like blueberries, green beans, or carrots.

Puppies grow quickly, especially during their rapid growth stage, which occurs between 2 and 6 months of age. During the teething phase, your puppy’s mouth and gums will be sore. Look for these signs that your puppy is teething: Chewing to alleviate pain Drooling Foul breath Crying or whining Small spots of blood on items your puppy chews Pickiness or reluctance to eat their food. If your puppy seems reluctant to eat their dry food due to teething, don’t switch to a new formula to stimulate their appetite. Mix your puppy’s regular premium dry food with a premium canned puppy food to soften the dry food and make mealtime even more appealing. Add a small amount of warm water to dry food to soften it. Feeding dry food and biscuits loosens the teeth, so pups can get through the teething process quicker. If your puppy’s appetite loss persists, see your veterinarian before you switch food.

From about 3 to 6 months, most pups will lose their puppy teeth. During this phase, his mouth and gums may be very sensitive, which could cause him to be a bit picky when it comes to eating. There's nothing you can do except to wait it out, even if his appetite is low for a couple of days. Don't switch to a new formula to stimulate your puppy's appetite. Changing food at this time can cause additional stress and intestinal upset. Mix his regular, premium dry food with a premium canned puppy food to soften the dry food and make mealtime even more appealing. Or, try some moist food to help him through this sensitive period. Soak dry food in warm water for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. If his appetite loss persists, see your veterinarian before you switch food.
