Dogs can come into contact with ticks quite easily. These parasites often live in long grasses in parks and woodlands, and grab onto the coat of passing animals as they brush through the grass. After finding a spot to bite, they can stay attached to their victim for days. Crucially, ticks can pass on certain diseases, like Lyme disease, while they are feeding, which is why it’s so important to try to stop the tick from biting your dog in the first place. Seresto flea and tick control collar has the benefit of being the longest lasting flea and tick product available, which means you can forget about flea and tick treatment for up to eight months. The ingredients in Seresto flea and tick control collar are distributed externally throughout the skin, where they are able to kill fleas and kill and repel ticks through contact – which means the parasites don’t have to bite your dog to be affected. The collar continuously releases a controlled dose of both active ingredients, remaining effective for up to eight months. An attachment of single ticks after treatment cannot be excluded; for this reason, a transmission of infectious diseases cannot be completely excluded if conditions are unfavourable.

Collars do not provide 100% protection. Despite the high protection from tick collars the products do warn that one female tick is enough to make a dog unwell or worse. Collars should therefore not be fully relied upon for protection. The answer is, it depends. While in some cases a tick collar may provide adequate protection for your dog, it depends on a number of factors including the area you live in, time of year and your pet's lifestyle. Kiltix carries a warning on its label reminding pet parents that this product is not fully effective against paralysis ticks. Daily tick searches and removal of ticks is recommended for all pets in paralysis tick prone areas, even when prevention is used.

Flea collars have been available for a long time. While some collars kill only fleas, many now also protect against other ectoparasites like ticks, lice, and even some mites that cause certain forms of mange. Modern flea collars work by holding a large concentration of anti-parasitic medication against your pet’s hair and skin. For example, imidacloprid and flumethrin—the active ingredients in the Seresto® collar—work against the nervous system of fleas and ticks, making it difficult for these parasites to attach to your pet’s skin and killing them if they do manage to bite. Collars like Seresto® have been shown to be just as effective as topical drops and are even better at repelling fleas than some of the oral preventative options. It takes about 24 hours for a new collar to start working against existing fleas, and then any new fleas that attach are killed within two hours.
