Parasites feed, grow or multiply in a way that harms your body. They rarely kill their host, but they often carry diseases that can be life-threatening. Many creatures that healthcare providers classify as vectors feed on your blood. Infected fleas can spread disease when they bite their host or if a host accidentally swallows an infected flea. Head lice and pubic lice travel from person to person through close contact, which may include sexual intercourse or sharing personal items like sheets, pillows or towels. Ticks typically bite you and then burrow into your skin. Helminths are visible to the naked eye in their adult stage — they range from greater than 1 millimeter to greater than 1 meter. Protozoans may spread through contaminated food or water, person-to-person contact or through the bite of a vector. Parasites and parasitic infections are common, they affect millions of people throughout the entire world. Many people may not notice they have an infection because they have few symptoms.

Intestinal parasites include worms and single-celled organisms that live in your intestines.
They can cause unpleasant symptoms and (in some cases) pose serious health risks.
Pinworms spread when you touch a surface contaminated with pinworm eggs and put your hands to your mouth.
The eggs hatch in your small intestine.
At night, female adults lay eggs around your anus, the process can cause anal itching.
Scratching the area and touching a surface without washing your hands transmits the eggs.
Ascaris spreads if you ingest the eggs after coming into contact with contaminated soil.
Hookworms spread through contaminated soil, the eggs in the soil mature into larvae, if you walk on the soil barefoot, the hookworms can enter your body through your skin.
Tapeworms spread when you ingest their eggs or larvae in undercooked pork, beef or fish.
You can get a fluke infection from drinking contaminated water or eating infected aquatic plants or fish.
Protozoa spread when you ingest trace amounts of poop that contain the eggs, they commonly spread through contaminated water or fruits and vegetables.

If you’ve ever been camping and you came down with diarrhea, gas, stomach cramps, bloating, and nausea, you’ve likely caught this bug. Symptoms include itching at night, a pimply rash, sores, and crusty patches. Common roundworm diseases and their symptoms include: Ascariasis -- belly pain, Hookworm -- blood loss, Pinworm -- anal itching, Trichinosis -- pain, fever, face swelling, pink eye, rash, Whipworm -- mucus, water and blood in stool, rectal prolapse. Some people have stomach pain and diarrhea, but others have no symptoms. It feels like the flu, and it causes body chills, fever, and sometimes nausea or vomiting. Symptoms show up quickly as fever, fatigue, aches, headache, rash, loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, and swollen eyelids. The diarrhea it causes can last a long time, but it usually goes away on its own without treatment.

You can tell if you have worms if you see small, white worms in your poo that look like pieces of thread or have extreme itching around your anus, particularly at night, this is probably threadworms.
If you find a large worm, a piece of worm or worm eggs in your poo, have a red, itchy worm-shaped rash on your skin, have sickness, diarrhoea or a stomach ache for longer than 2 weeks, or are losing weight for no reason, these could be symptoms of something like roundworm, hookworm or tapeworm.
You might be asked to provide a sample of poo so it can be tested for worm eggs.
Any worms in your gut will eventually pass out in your poo, you may not notice this.
You should go back to the GP if your symptoms do not get better in 2 weeks or you keep passing live worms in your poo.
