Always be sure to take along plenty of water for the both of you when you go out for a long hike, walk or run with your dog. Stop for water breaks, maybe around every mile or when you see that your dog is panting hard, allowing your dog to drink just enough to quench her thirst each time. Don’t allow her to gulp large amounts of water at one time, as this can lead stomach upset or bloating. You can also use a bottle with a pop-up spout, so that you can control the amount of water your dog is drinking. After a period of cooling down and rehydrating with water -- small amounts at a time so he doesn’t gulp too much down -- feed your dog her normal meal.

Your dog is unlikely to voluntarily drink enough water from their bowl to cause water intoxication, so you shouldn’t restrict their water. Limit the time a dog spends in water to prevent them from swallowing too much. Give them time to rest with regular breaks to allow the body’s natural fluid balancing system time to manage any excess intake. Don’t restrict your dog from drinking water from their bowl. If your dog is drinking excessively, contact your vet for advice.

Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water
Continue to pour cool water over the dog until their breathing starts to settle, but not so much that they start shivering
Submerge or cover the dog in water that is cooler than their body temperature.
Simultaneously, fan the dog to increase air circulation.
In mild cases, towels can be placed under the dog, but never over it, and in a true emergency, water immersion or pouring water with air movement is ideal.

Provide shade and water provide constant access to shaded areas inside and out. Make sure there is always clean, cold water available. Put ice cubes into your dog's water bowl or make some tasty ice cube treats. You could also freeze a Kong toy full of treats and water. Give your pet damp towels to lie on or an ice pack wrapped in a towel. Never place a damp towel over your dog as this can trap in heat. Use frozen toys, paddling pools, or water sprinklers to entertain and cool your dog down. But remember not all dogs like water, so don’t force them if they don't want to.
