Can a dog truly have two owners. My wife and I are getting a puppy this weekend. Ideally we would like for the dog to love us both equally and want to spend time with both of us. But most of our friends' dogs seem to have a preference of one person over another. I am sure it has a lot to do with who can spend more time with him and who feeds him, etc. But I don't want to try to fight with my wife to feed him or walk him. I would like it to be equitable and for the dog to show us both the same affection. Is this a pipe dream.

If the parties were living together at the time of purchase and it was a joint agreement to get a dog as a pet for the family unit, it is very likely that such a dog will be regarded as jointly owned. Who bought the dog, including whose name is on the contract made with the rescue centre or breeder, is also considered. Whose name is registered with the Kennel Club and who is registered on the microchip database are other factors. Whose name is recorded at the vet’s practice and who is registered on the insurance certificate are also taken into account. Who usually takes care of the dog and who pays the day to day expenses for the dog are considered as well. Was the dog bought as a gift is another factor to consider when determining ownership.

Responsible multiple dog owners alter their pets when they are pet homes. If you have multiple dogs that can be reactive, then you MUST supervise all outside visits, with no exceptions. It is a big responsibility to maintain a household with multiple dogs. Please respect that responsibility. Training is even more important when you have breeds that others perceive as scary. You should not accept this responsibility lightly. Training can make the difference in how your neighbors view your dogs. Training can make a difference in whether your dogs are viewed as scary or not. Please be responsible and train your dogs.
