At first, we thought it might be motion sickness, but the dog will do it even if the car is not turned on or moving. He does not throw up or anything like that. The odd thing is that the dog does not hesitate to climb in the car and does not try to escape. If my friend holds the dog on her lap and speaks soothingly to it, the dog is still agitated. He only starts up a few minutes after the car has been moving and it escalates to near panic by the end of the trip. We have tried crating him in the car, giving him treats, giving him treats in his crate, putting him on a short leash in front, short leash in the back, on a platform, on the floor, etc. He does it no matter the destination, the duration, time of year, etc. Every time the dog is in the car, it begins crying and becomes very agitated. This problem is worsening.

I thought initially maybe he was scared, but he wasn’t shaking or showing any signs of fear and it soon became apparent that he was more excited and anxious than anything. If your dog is excited by the destination at the end of the car ride, this is where the issues start. If he then thinks he is in charge of where the car is going and he can’t steer and actually control the direction and the car’s speed, it is going to cause him to have extreme anxiety. Many owners have this same issue and they come to me at a total loss of what to do. Generally these dogs start whining and barking the instant you put them in the car and continue all the way to the dog park, doggie daycare center or Grandma’s house. The same dogs also want to get into the front seat, which cannot only be annoying but also very dangerous. They block the drivers view, jump on the driver and may even go down by his legs and get in between their feet and the gas peddle or brake. Yes, all these things happened to Tyler and me. I always want to understand the cause of a behavior before I set out to fix it. This is always the best approach when it comes to stopping an unwanted behavior. I soon realized that the reason that Tyler was going crazy in the car on my way to work was that he was very excited to get there. He also thought that he was in charge of this journey and where the car was going.

Your dog could have motion sickness. When your dog is in the car, do they not only cry or whine but also pace, smack or lick their lips, and maybe even retch or vomit. If so, then your dog is probably suffering from motion sickness. Your dog could feel unsafe and not secure in the car. It can make them feel like they aren’t secure. Your dog associates riding in the car ride with negative experiences. If your dog only gets in the car a few times a year, and every time they do it’s to go to the vet for shots, they’ll quickly learn that getting in the car is not a fun time. Your dog is excited to be in the car. Dogs cry or whine when they’re upset, and they can also cry or whine when they’re excited. If they associate being in the car with fun times, or they realize you’re going to a fun place, they could cry from excitement.

Sometimes a dog’s whining is due to excitement. If your dog associates the car with enjoyable outings, they might whine as their way of saying they are eager to arrive. This excited energy can make longer trips noisy but is generally a positive reaction. Many dogs suffer from motion sickness, which doesn’t always result in vomiting but can cause nausea, drooling, and discomfort. This unpleasant feeling can make dogs whine or whimper as they try to cope with the sensation. Some dogs develop anxiety related to car travel due to infrequent travel or past unpleasant experiences, such as vet visits or being left alone in the car. This anxiety can manifest in whining, trembling, or attempts to escape. Just like at home, dogs may cry or whine when they need to relieve themselves. Cars can quickly become too warm for dogs even if the temperature seems comfortable for humans, and heat from the car heater, fur coats, and closed windows contribute to overheating risks.

Her family was not sure if it was the car she was riding in, the noise, or being contained that caused her to whine, or the other cars whizzing by that upset Taffy, but the whining was terribly annoying and distracting to the driver. A dog that whines in the car constantly is not only annoying but can be dangerous, as the dog distracts the driver with the noise and upset he is causing. Getting your dog used to cars and reducing anxiety around the sights and sounds of the car can be helpful. Check with your veterinarian to be sure that your dog is not experiencing car sickness on trips. This may be a cause of whining, and medication to alleviate motion sickness may help.
