By the time most pet owners get their first puppy, usually after the puppies are older than four weeks, they have already started drinking water, as they are weaned off their mother’s milk. Since this period is a big step in a puppy’s life, they’re adjusting to new food, learning new behaviors, and even drinking water from a bowl for the first time. By the time they’re six to eight weeks old, puppies are usually weaned and should be able to rely on puppy food and water as their main diet. Puppies, especially when they’re growing fast, need plenty of water. They can become dehydrated without enough water, leading to tiredness, constipation, or even more serious issues. You can encourage them by placing a shallow dish of water nearby so it’s easy to reach. Keep an eye on them and be patient—it can take a bit of practice for some pups to get the hang of it.

Typically, puppies will start being introduced to water in a shallow flat, heavy bowl at around 3 to 4 weeks of age. By that point, their mother can no longer provide enough fluid with lactation, with nursing. So we need to start puppies on water. I usually start water a couple of days before I start a solid food or a mush for the puppies so that they’re accustomed to learning how to drink. Puppies should be offered water many times a day. It’s very important that we offer water every couple of hours in a quantity and a form that is safe for them.

To keep your puppy on a healthy path, it’s best to begin introducing solid foods and water at around 4 to 5 weeks of age. This will help them get the right nutrition they need since milk alone doesn’t provide enough energy and nutrients for their growth after 4 weeks of age.
When it comes time for the mother to step away from these duties, puppies need to be accustomed to the water and ready to handle their hydration needs on their own.
At around 4 weeks of age, you can begin mixing your desired puppy food with water and/or milk replacement in a ratio of 1:3 to form a paste.
While introducing your puppy to solid foods, always have water available.
If they don’t explore the water on their own, make sure to gently nudge them toward it.
Your puppy’s weaning process should start at around 4 weeks of age and should be gradual and consistent.
In some situations, puppies find themselves orphaned or separated from their mother, if this happens, weaning can be started as soon as 3 weeks of age.
However, you shouldn’t use water as a milk replacement.
