It was a year during which I lost all the energy, enthusiasm and vitality that had previously come so naturally to me. I lost interest in myself and in those around me and spent the first couple of months essentially clinging to the sofa. My therapist seemed too young and naïve to understand what I was going through. Besides, I couldn’t bear the fact that she spent so much time talking about the importance of a routine. Of exercise. Of eating well. Of sleeping regular hours. Perhaps this was what she meant about the need for routine? Most days I would have preferred to roll over and go back to sleep. But, most of all, the exercise was good for tiring out my whirring mind and calming the adrenalin that constantly pumped around my body. By stopping exercise, eating crap and drinking beer every day, I’d pressed the self-destruct button long before. Lack of exercise meant I was wired with adrenalin; a rubbish diet meant I felt lethargic; and I’d become convinced I needed beer to help me relax. And there you have a perfect cocktail for a crisis. I’ve come to realise that what once would have been a lazy few weeks in my life, can now actually compromise my mental health.

As I was travelling back home, it struck me how much the change from my usual routine had boosted my mood. Once again, the departure from my usual day-to-day activities sparked a positive mindset and reinvigorated me for the return to my normal routine the following week. However, in many ways, taking breaks from a routine can be just as important for your health, both physical and mental. A study conducted by Kuoni and Nuffield Health (2013) reported that breaking the work routine by going on holiday improved resilience to stress and sleep patterns, as well as blood pressure. So overall, it's not surprising that taking the time to attend events recently was a positive step for me. As well as the opportunity to network and talk to researchers, midwives and subscribers to our journal, it also gave me a mental boost, breaking my usual routine and giving me the chance to reset. I'd encourage all our readers to change up their usual routine when they can, whether by going for a walk or attending a conference, the positive effects will be felt.

Because when you don't rest, you wear out, wear down, and start running on empty. Then you're not much good for yourself or anyone else. But when you get some rest and get more rested, you have more energy, mental clarity, resilience for the hard things, patience, and wholehearted caring for others. The mind/brain is like a muscle — for example, using it consumes extra glucose much like lifting weights does — and it needs to stop working sometimes to replenish and rebuild itself. Sometimes you can really feel what you need to do by feeling what's happening for you when you don't. No stress, no pressure, nothing weighing on you in the back of your mind. No sense of things left undone. Utterly at rest.

However, it’s not so good to never shake up your routine or break out of it every once in a while. Although it may sound a little intimidating, there are a lot of benefits to doing it. When you’re stuck in a routine, you don’t feel pressured. While constantly feeling pressured is a bad thing and can cause anxiety, a little pressure can go a long way. Feeling like you have to get something done pushes you to do it. When you’re just following the same routine every day, it doesn’t leave a ton of room for creative thought or outside-the-box thinking. Breaking out of your routine can help you look at things a new way. You may gain a new perspective on things that helps you look at a problem in a new light. Breaking out of your routine can be difficult and intimidating, but doing it will increase your confidence. By breaking out of your routine, you can also help to break these habits. At the very least, you might be able to better see how your bad habits are affecting you.

Sometimes breaking your routine is really important. Sometimes life, energy, and creativity are found outside of your usual routine. A routine keeps you on task and keeps you moving when things are hard, but sometimes breaking your routine is exactly what you need. Maybe that morning I needed kindness more than I needed consistency.
