We can use it for lots of different things. I like to use ‘place’ to confine a dog but still allow them to be involved and engaged in the environment. A lot of times it is very calming for the dog. It helps me to know exactly where my dog is always without penning them up. ‘Place’ can be used to slow down a busy dog or let a dog unwind when you have guests over. It has lots of other uses and your imagination is the limit. If you have a dog, the answer is YES, ‘place’ can be a great way to wind down a hyper dog, give a shy dog a safe space, and get lazy dogs, I mean calm dogs, out of the way. ‘Place’ is great for all dogs.

The Place command to me seems like a stay, like stay on this area or this place, am I getting this right or there's something else to it. I also want to teach her the break command, when I tell her to sit, I expect she stays in sit until Off/break. Members Online • Stay vs Place. I have a 5 month Podengo mix puppy and need to go back to training more regularly, thought about the Place command would be my focus but when in training a doubt came, what is the difference between stay and place.

The place command is nicknamed the duct tape of dog training for a reason: it can help with countless behavior issues. The place command is super helpful for preventing naughty behaviors like: Counter-surfing, Trash diving, Chewing inappropriate items, Marking in the house. You will still need to say no to unwanted behaviors in order for your dog to understand that those behaviors are off limits; however, you’ll also need to clarify what your dog should be doing instead. That’s where the place command is helpful. It gives your dog clear directions on what to do with herself instead of practicing all his naughty habits. The place command gives your dog clear instructions on what to do with herself during these high intensity moments. It gives her something to focus on, a job to do, and so long as you’re properly advocating for your dog, it creates space between your dog and the person/dog that makes them feel uncomfortable. The place command is a proactive strategy you can use to help your dog develop a different pattern of behavior in moments when they’re typically too much. Overall, the place command is a fantastic way to help your dog practice good, calm behavior in LOTS of different moments.

Place is when you ask your dog to go to a specific and definable location. The dog is then required to stay on the said place until they are released. The place action does not and should not require the dog to be in any position. It is okay to use your requested location to maintain the dog's focus and stack additional cues on top of it during training exercises. The place does require the aid of a definable object, preferably one with clear boundaries. Some examples: A truck bed, picnic table, or park bench can make natural place locations when out and about. In the home: a bench, mat, or lifted dog bed and dog crate can be used as places. The point is as long as your dog can define the edges of their place, then you're in business. When the dog is allowed freedom of movement while staying in it's set location makes it the preferred option when the duration of the behavior is important.

A place command, in case you aren’t aware, teaches the dog to place his body (all four paws) on (or in) the object you designate. The dog has free choice as to how they wish to position themselves. They can sit, lie down, or stand plus are allowed to change position if they desire. The only hard and fast rule are that they keep four paws remaining in or on that area. Why is Place Such an Awesome Thing to Teach, it is awesome because of the versatility. There is so many day to day applications of this dog training skill that make life more enjoyable and easier to manage. One of the common uses for the place command is an opportunity to enjoy a meal without having the dogs underfoot. When traveling, my dogs understand that “in the car” is the equivalent place command that allows them free range of movement in the vehicle BUT they should not jump out when I open a door or put down the tailgate. Sometimes we even have a place within a place, an example of this is having a designated area inside the car to keep the dog from roaming freely from seat to seat. There are also occasional uses where you might find the Place command to be of significant value, when visiting the veterinarian, “Place” can be very handy in getting the dog to willingly step onto the scale to get their weight. The uses are limitless, but before you begin to generalize the place concept to all these varying uses, remember to start simple with a raised platform that is stable and easy for your dog to learn on.
