Because it is a barrier, if water gets into the outer ear, it cannot cause a middle ear infection. The only exceptions are if your child has ear tubes or a perforation in the eardrum. External ear infections (otitis externa), however, can be the result of fluid getting into the ear canal. Never use a Q tip in a baby’s ear to dry or clean it. It can risk perforating the ear drum, or even push ear wax further back. Focus on cleaning the outer part of the ear itself with a washcloth only.

If you have water in your ears, take these steps to get it out safely. Dry your outer ear with a soft towel or cloth. Don’t stick the cloth into the canal. Tip your head to one side to help water drain. Gently pull on your earlobe. This will straighten your ear canal and help the water flow. Turn your blow dryer on the lowest setting and blow it toward your ear. Hold it at least a foot away. Try over-the-counter drying drops. To make drying drops at home, mix 1 part white vinegar to 1 part rubbing alcohol. Pour 1 teaspoon of the solution into each ear; tilt your head and let it drain out.

Using over-the-counter drops of a dilute solution of acetic acid or alcohol in the ears after swimming can help prevent swimmer's ear, especially in kids who get it a lot. It's also important to keep water out of your child's ear during the entire course of treatment. You can use a cotton ball covered in petroleum jelly as an earplug to protect your child's ear from water during showering or bathing. Never put objects into kids' ears, including cotton-tipped swabs. To avoid injuring an ear, young kids should not clean their ears themselves. Dry skin or eczema, scratching the ear canal, ear cleaning with cotton swabs, or putting things like bobby pins or paper clips into the ear can all increase the risk of otitis externa.
