If you are being attacked by a dog, using a series of loud, firm commands can help you divert their attention and avoid dog bites. It is important to keep your voice clear and show no signs of fear. Try repeating the following words: Stop Off Down Come Leave it No Back. Dogs do not like loud noises, and the piercing sound of a whistle could be enough to stop a dog in attack mode in its tracks. If an angry animal starts to approach you, take a few treats and throw them far away from you. This should provide enough of a distraction to divert the dog’s attention away from you. Spraying an attacking dog with water will not hurt the animal, but will get him to back off. Do not kick the dog, or it might bite down harder. Do not scream and run, or you might encourage the dog to chase after you. Don’t use pepper spray—it will most likely not work on the dog, but might affect you. Do not stick out your hand in protection, or the dog might bite your fingers.

Your dog is considered dangerously out of control if it: injures someone makes someone worried that it might injure them. A court could also decide that your dog is dangerously out of control if either of the following apply: it attacks someone’s animal the owner of an animal thinks they could be injured if they tried to stop your dog attacking their animal. You can get an unlimited fine or be sent to prison for up to 6 months (or both) if your dog is dangerously out of control. You can report a dog that’s out of control. If you let your dog injure someone you can be sent to prison for up to 5 years or fined (or both). If you deliberately use your dog to injure someone you could be charged with ‘malicious wounding’.

If you’re running along and a dog comes sprinting out from his front yard, you should face the dog and stand still, like a pole or a tree. Your arms can be folded in front of you so that you don’t accidentally swing them around. Most dogs that race to you even aggressively do not have the intention of biting; rather the charge, bark and growl are just a threat to get you to go away. When you stand still instead of continuing to move, they bark and back away and if you step towards them they back away faster. But you can also back away slowly in a ho-hum, relaxed manner. Once you’ve built up some distance you can turn and continue on your planned route. If the dog starts jumping up on you still try to remain calm and keep your back to the dog so that the dog can’t get to your face. If the dog actually takes you to the ground, roll up in a ball with your knees bend and your hands around the back of your neck and hold as still as possible. It’s better to consider carrying pepper spray after you’ve taken a course on how to use it. Anything that you can place against your body as a shield or wall can also help, just held firmly and NOT pushed towards or used to try hit the dog.
