Fleas can bite people, most often on the feet, ankles, and legs. They may bite three times in a row. Fleas can carry several different diseases that may be transmitted during a bite. In the United States, the most common include plague and typhus, both of which are from bacteria and require medical treatment like antibiotics. A flea bite may cause an allergic reaction on your skin because your body reacts strongly to the flea’s saliva, resulting in irritated, red skin, extreme itchiness, hives, and infection. Fleas may carry tapeworms, and if you or an animal ingests a flea, it’s possible to get a tapeworm, which may not be harmful to your overall health or the health of your pet, but can still cause issues. The visual results from a flea bite may last a few days, but they may get worse if you are more sensitive to the bites or if the area becomes infected. Fleas are more than a nuisance, they can actually cause several serious conditions and may be fatal to animals if the infestation is so severe that it interferes with their overall health.

Fleas are small insects that survive by feeding on animal or human blood. Their bites can cause discomfort, itchiness, and irritation. Sometimes, fleas can infect people or pets with the germs that cause flea-borne typhus, plague, or cat scratch disease. Murine typhus — spread to people by infected cat fleas, infected Oriental rat fleas, or their feces. The germ that causes the illness is shed in the flea feces and are introduced through the cat's scratch. Fleas transmit germs that cause disease primarily through the processes of feeding on hosts or through fecal contamination, when infected flea feces are scratched into an open wound. Small children are at a higher risk than adults, as they may spend more time close to the floor and carpeted areas where fleas are found.

Flea bites rarely cause any lasting harm. They cause mild annoyance and irritation for a short period. However, flea bites can be dangerous because they may spread diseases that can be serious or even fatal. In some flea species, especially the species that commonly bother dogs and cats, baby fleas (larvae) feed on blood-rich adult flea poop (feces). Flea poop is also called flea dirt. Male and female fleas feed on blood, female fleas lay eggs after feeding on blood.

But fleas, like so many insects and pests, can also spread disease to humans. If you let the fleas run rampant, they may spread one or more of these five disease. Humans and pets become infected with tapeworms if they consume an affected flea, and the more fleas you have in your home, the more likely it is that one may jump into your mouth, food or drink. However, if the tapeworms become big or are left untreated, you may experience nausea, fatigue, weight loss, vitamin deficiency, diarrhea, and weakness. Not every flea bite results in the spread of disease, but the more fleas you have in your home, the higher the chances are that you, your child, or your pets will get sick.
