Is it good to play Hide and Seek with your dog?

Hide and Seek is an example of one fun game that I play with some very rambunctious dogs, especially when the weather is poor and we can’t do much outdoors. The benefits of this game are three-fold: you are expending your dog’s mental and physical energy, reminding them to “come” when called, and also teaching them to seek you out despite distractions or even if you are out of sight. For this game, it will be best if your dog is already able to come when called. This is great practice for that one time you really need when you get separated on a hike or they escape the backyard. Some dogs pick up on the game quickly and others need more encouragement or work on their recall/come. As your dog becomes more confident, you can raise the difficulty level and even include the entire family so your dog has fun with everyone and learns to reliably come to each of you. A little more fun than the standard practice for coming when called.

I think you guys can take it, however. The most fun thing I’ve been doing lately with my dogs is playing hide and go seek. I’m a behavior geek anyway – I love watching dogs (and other animals) work and play and interact – but I can’t tell you how entertaining it is for me to watch my adolescent dog learning how the game works, and try to anticipate my hiding strategies. I will admit I played a lot over the past couple of weeks, when I was working on the canned food review that will appear in the October issue. When I would get up from my computer to take a snack break or bathroom break, sometimes I’d sneak upstairs afterward, hide behind a door or curtain, or step into a closet, and then whistle for the dogs. It’s the most fun when they light up like that. Gotcha they clearly say, and erupt into wiggles and wagging. Otto starts play growling – he vocalizes a lot – and Woody leaps into the air and bashes about. Good dogs, Wowie, you did it I tell them, and we celebrate as we all run down the stairs together.
